About This Item
New York, 1901. Paper covered photo album. Otherwise very good condition. A small photo album with 32 b&w silvertone photographs including many of Major General Frederick Dent Grant, 1st son of General & President Ulysses S. Grant & Julia Grant. The album documents a trip to West Point, Broadalbin, NY, Oppenheim, NY, Johnstown, NY, Sacandaga Park, Governor's Island, Ocean Grove and Spring Lake NJ. While no photographer is named, this may have been a West Point graduate intimate with the Generals at the turn of the century.
Col. Edgar S. Dudley was a professor of Law and History at West Point from July 31, 1901 to June 14, 1909, when he retired as a Brig.-General. He is pictured with the Grant's a Governors Island at the end of the album. It's possible that the photo titled "A glimpse into the Study where Prof. does much work" is of his office. As he died in 1911, and Grant died at Governor's Island in April 1912, the album is likely sometime between mid 1901-mid 1909.
Most images have a manuscript caption beneath, including General Frederick Dent Grant & his wife; Gen. Edgar S. Mills (Superintendent of West Point, 1854-1916) and Mrs. Mills, Gen. Adna [1842-1914] and Mrs. Chaffee, Gen. Brooke [1838-1926] and Mrs. Brooke; Gen. and Mrs. F.D. Grant [1850-1912] and Col. Dudley (Edgar). Images are mostly of buildings and views, however the people imaged include 2 unnamed women and a cadet with the caption, "Are we cadeting?".
Images include 12 of West Point buildings plus interiors; the Keneata Inn in Broadalbin, NY [5] with a view of Robert Chambers home; Col. Edgar S. Dudley home in Oppenheim NY [2]; Charles Knox' home in Johnstown, NY [3]; Sacandaga Park, NY [3]; Gen. Grant's quarters at Governor's Island with Mrs. Grant, General Grant and Col. Dudley [1]; Ocean Grove [1], and the Hotel Wilburton in Spring Lake, NJ [1].
Album 7 x 5 1/2" grey paper covers with "Photographs" in upper left, images 4 1/2 x 3 5/8". Album cover detached, images in very good condition.
