London: Blackie & Son, 1895. First edition. Cloth. Good. 7.5" by 5" . Ralph Peacock. Scarce first edition of this historical novel by G. A. Henty, with illustrations by Ralph Peacock. The first edition of this work, published in 1894 at six shillings before being reissued later in a cheaper edition. As usual with Blackie novels at this period, the earliest issues contain thirty-two leaves catalogues with no mention of the books for the current year, but which include Henry's novels published the previous year, and title page dated 1895 (G.A. Henty 1832-1902: A Bibliographical Study, Peter Newbolt, 66.1)A tale of the Norman conquest, set in Britain and Normandy in 1066. Written by George Alfred Henty, English novelist and war correspondent known for his influential work of juvenile adventure and historical fiction, which inspired authors of the likes of Herbert Strang, Henry Everett McNeil, and Percy F. Westerman among others.Illustrated with eleven black and white plates by Ralph Peacock. Collated without plate to face p. 83 "Beorn came down with a rush". In the original publisher's pictorial cloth binding. Externally sound with shelf wear, bumped to head and tail of spine, back strip faded, boards lightly marked and soiled. Front hinge slightly strained, boards holding. Previous ownership inscription to half title. Internally, binding generally firm. Light minor spotting to occasional leaf, particularly first and last few, pages otherwise generally clean. Good
