Dark blue cloth binding with tipped paper label with the flags of the antagonists in colour (orange, blue, green and white); titling in gilt on the spine. Rather stunningly attractive! Clean text; 478 pages, with six maps in colour.Previous-owner stamp on the front paste-down. There is a small tear on the title page that has been professionally repaired. The boards are a touch shelf rubbed, but remain strong and sturdy. Internally, there are no markings or inscriptions, and the pages within are crisp, clean and complete. This is a Very Good copy of the First Printing of the First Edition. Dark blue ribbed cloth binding, ruled; with titling and ruling in gilt on the spine. Clean text; 552 pages; Appendix and fold-out map; with a 12-page (unopened) publisher's catalog in the rear. Mild bumping, tips a bit rubbed. Some small tears to the head and foot of the spine; faint crease on front cover; spine is faded to a dark brown but the gilt remains nicely bright as day.Both gutters have cracking; they are holding but should be reinforced. This is a much better copy than the list of faults would indicate, and it presents very well. In an archival plastic protector.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Original blue cloth binding with ornate floral blocking and publisher's monogram to the upper board, and gilt titles to the spine. Top edge gilt. White endpapers blocked in light blue with a framing device around the publisher's monogram. Spine is tanned with rubbed ends. Board edges have minor wear with a dent along lower front edge, corners mildly bumped. Endpapers are tanned and there is a hinge break at title page. Includes rare Conan Arthur Doyle frontispiece and 7 further b&w illustrations, all of which have light foxing to rear side. Reportedly, Doyle took exeption to the use of his image for the frontis in place of that of Lord Roberts which had been used in all impressions of the first edition. This particular edition was suppressed due to Conan Doyle taking exception to the use of his portrait.
