Light stains to front endpaper and half-title. Binding tight. In the dust jacket that has slight discoloration to spine foxed; wear at head of spine. In the illustrated slipcase, a tad worn, and with a bookseller tag (Paul Elder Books, San Francisco) on lower front corner. Celebrated as Vogue magazine's top photographer for 60 years, Penn's was quite private and avoided self-promotion; instead, his ongoing drive was the expansion of photography's limitations. This is his first book. Dust jacket is now preserved within a clear, removable archival sleeve.

Still a pleasing copy of what is still one of the best books on Penn. (Roth 158-159).

The recipient was a well known graphic artist in advertising, part of the 1996 Hall of Fame of the Art Directors Club and named Director of the Year in 1959 by the National Society of Art Directors. Photographer Duane Michals, a childhood friend from McKeesport -- a suburb of Pittsburgh -- recalled that he 'worked in this little steel town, without any real nuruturing and bloomed into a major talent.' So, a nice link between a fine arts photographer who occasional did commercial and advertising work with one of the major advertising men of his day.
