EDINBURGH: ADAM AND CHARLES BLACK, 1877. Hardcover. Good to Very Good/No Jacket. WAVERLEY NOVELS 48 VOLS COMPLETE by SIR WALTER SCOTT, BART pub by ADAM AND CHARLES BLACK; 1877; EDINBURGH; CLOTH BINDINGS; GOOD TO VERY GOOD 48 volume complete illustrated set 1877 - 1879. This is an unusual set, in the original purple / red boards with the publisher's original white printed paper labels to the spine. It's not common to see a complete set in the original format like this, since most copies were rebound with the original bindings discarded. There is some rubbing and marking to the boards, and the spines are occasionally sunned, but the joints are strong and the hinges aren't cracked. The pages are extremely bright white, and clean throughout. Each vol is 18cm high, 13cm across the boards. The set stretches 155cm along the shelf. There is mottling and marks to some boards, but overall, it's all there in the original format, and it's this that makes them so unusual. There are… Read More

Description:
London: Adam & Charles Black, 1871. Leather. Very Good. 7.5" by 5". Various. A leather bound set of Walter Scott's popular historical novels. A leather bound set of Walter Scott's Waverley Novels. The illustrated centenary edition of Scott's historical novels set in the medieval era, and the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The author's fascination with moments of transition is evident in this twenty five volume set, and the novels demonstrate his belief that very different societies move through the same stages as they develop. For nearly a century after their publication, the lawyer's novels continued to be read all across Europe. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of volume I, 'Captain J. Hardy Welsby, The Grange, Southport'. Welsby has also inscribed his name in ink to the front free endpaper, dated 1882. Welsby co-founded Hesketh golf club in Southport. There is another ink inscription to the top edge of the same page by 'Emma Herring', beneath which Coela Harrison and… Read More
