Interview with Bart Hendricks of BBBandB

When did you get started in bookselling?
To be honest, I have never sold books at this scale. I initially started out just collecting 1st edition books of authors I liked. Then it expanded to spotting others that I felt had some value, or just interested in owning a rare edition. As for selling, it started with one offs, here and there. It was not till I stumbled across an estate sale several months ago that had a lot of books that I wanted, when I seriously thought about selling them online.
What drew you to bookselling?
It is more of the book buying that selling for me. I enjoy collecting rare editions, enjoy the "hunt" if you will. I just don't have the room for them all. So it seems like the right time to share them with someone else.
Did you have any mentors in becoming a bookseller?
Not at this time.
What are your specialties as a dealer?
I focus on First Editions, mostly. Various authors of all genres.
What's the most amazing book you've ever sold?
Nothing crazy yet, hopefully soon.
What is your favorite part of being a bookseller?
The joy of being able to sell rare find. Selling it to someone finds personal value in the book, not just the monetary value.
Do you have an open storefront or have you in the past?
Not at this time
What is your favorite bookshop (other than your own)?
Our public library sells books that people have donated. I have found some gems in there.
What do you personally like to read? Collect?
I am all over the place when it comes to what I read. I collect first editions.
What's your favorite book you personally own? Would you sell it, if the price were right?
Cold Fire by Dean Koontz. Signed first edition. It is my favorite because this book got me started in reading for pleasure rather than what was required in school at the time. It is not one of his well known books, but it has personal meaning to me and that is why I am holding on to it. I hope I am able to sell this kind of book to someone. Everything is for sale, but I would have to really think about it.
What one book would you buy if price were no object?
Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy or The Stand by Stephen King
If you were stranded on a desert island and could bring three books, what would they be?
Tough one... Lonesome Dove, The Rainmaker, No Country for Old Men
