A remarkable song by the great American composer Aaron Copland,"Written especially in honor of Nadia Boulanger's fiftieth year of teaching." and dated 1954. Ray Wilding-White (1922-2001), born in England, grew up in the USA and began music study at Juilliard after WWII. His main composition teachers were Aaron Copland and Luigi Dallapiccola. These 8 songs (most for just one soprano) are prime examples of his avant-garde sensibility and are scored for an ensemble of flute/alto flute, clarinet, trumpet, violin, viola, cello, and piano/harpsichord - employed from song to song in various combinations. From Cui's 1899 cycle of 25 Pushkin songs, this is a beautiful, sensitive setting of the Pushkin poem, which depicts the statue of a woman beside a stream [an actual statue on the grounds of the Winter Palace], mourning her broken urn, as from the urn the water miraculously flows on. In the key of Db-Major, its range is from Db above middle C to Eb a 9th above. The text here (not in Russian) is given in French (unattributed) and English (translated by A. M. von Blomberg.
