Paris, 1746. Copper engraving, 22 x 30 cm, modern hand colour, blank verso. Jacques Nicolas Bellin the elder (1703-1772) was first chief hydrographic engineer of the "Dépôt des cartes, plans et journaux du Ministère de la Marine," charged by Louis XIV with mapping the coasts of France first and then the rest of the world. He was also a member of the Royal Society of London. Description:
London, 1831. Steel engraving, 35.5 x 43 cm, engraved by John Dower, original hand colour, numbered in an old hand, blank verso; published in a first edition of Teesdale’s ‘New General Atlas of the World’. The site of Cook’s death on Hawaii (‘Owhyhee’) is noted. The map features two regions named New South Wales. Cook’s New South Wales in Australia remains familiar, but the other, on the shores of Hudson Bay, was named in the early 17th century; like some of the other nomenclature including New Georgia and New Hanover on the west coast of Canada, it has fallen out of use. London,, 1912. Engraved British chart of Jiaozhou Bay on the southern coast of the Shandong Peninsula, 66 x 100 cm, black and white, engraved by John and Charles Walker after A.J. Boyle, centrefold; shows soundings etc, with interior detail of relief, roads and settlements. Surveyed by the sloop HMS Swallow in 1863 and first published in 1865, our example of the chart incorporates additions and corrections to 1912 from various sources, including German charts to 1911. Jiaozhou Bay was a German colonial concession, the Kiautschou Bay concession, between 1898 and 1914, with its adminstrative centre at Tsingtau, or Quingdeo. The layout of the town, rapidly expanded by the Germans, is shown in detail at the centre of the chart. Map

Description:
Edinburgh, 1815. Copper engraving, 51.5 x 66 cm, engraved by John and George Menzies, original hand colour, blank verso; engraved in 1814 and first published in Thomson’s ‘New General Atlas’ in 1815. A detailed map which Walter suggests has ‘several clear improvements’ on its immediate predecessors, such as Jones’ map of 1813. Thomson made his fortune through his extremely successful 'New General Atlas', but in the 1820s he bankrupted himself, twice (in the process of creating his large-scale 'Atlas of Scotland' in a burst of patriotic pride) and he disappears from the historical record. Thomson's maps are characteristic of the Edinburgh school of cartography which flourished at the beginning of the nineteenth-century and is noted for its clarity and elegance; other exponents include John Cary and John Pinkerton.
