This rare two-volume set is the first major publication by the father of Egyptology, Jean-François Champollion (1790-1832). Champollion is the man who made the breakthrough discovery which enabled translation of the Egyptian hieroglyphs. There were 30 copies published in 1811, but this edition is the major publication of this work. Printed on laid paper, and bound in full calf. The title's English translation is "Egypt under the Pharaohs, or research on the geography, religion, language, scriptures and history of Egypt before the invasion of Cambyses". An extremely scarce map titled "Panorama of the Mississippi Valley and its Fortifications", which illustrates the theater of war that was the Mississippi River during the American Civil War. Published in New York in 1863 by Charles Magnus. Nicely matted and well framed. This broadside map shows the cities, towns, stores, plantations, mills, academies, etc. along the Mississippi River from St. Louis southward through Memphis, continuing through Vicksburg, and ending at the Gulf of Mexico. Each panel is embellished with a vignette of the important city of that area. Two insets list distances: "various points on the Mississippi, from St Louis to New Orleans", and "Distances navigable by steam on Mississippi River and principal its branches". It was filmed in 1992 for the Ray Bradbury Theater television series. Bradbury, author of Fahrenheit 451 and The Martian Chronicles, is one of America's most celebrated science fiction, fantasy and horror writers. In this story, an American author visits a Dublin pub where he is caught up in the excitement over a local sporting event known as "anthem sprinting." Runners compete to see who can exit the theater fastest during the few seconds between the end of a film and the start of the Irish National Anthem. Handwritten changes by the author on a couple of pages (see photos). Included is a signed letter from Bradbury.
