Toned, stained, soiled, tattered, small losses not affecting text, shallow diagonal corner creasing throughout, about good & still quite useful.
An early edition, perhaps the first American, of part of Dumas' "Celebrated Crimes" series, originally published in 1839 & 1840. The series provides semi-fictionalized accounts of the most noteworthy criminal cases in European history.

From the library of Richard Cecil Garlick, Jr who was professor of French at the University of Virginia. Henry Carrington Lancaster, chair of the Romance Languages Department and professor of French at Johns Hopkins, was the world's foremost expert on French dramatic literature of the 16th through 18th centuries. He was also the first non French citizen to be awarded the Legion d'Honneur Three further volumes, extending the exhaustive treatise through 1700 (not offered here). were eventually published.

A really nice example of an American early 20th century publisher's cloth binding & an engaging read by "The Dean of American Letters."

London: Edward Moxon, 1839. Early printing of the first illustrated edition, originally published in 1830. Sextodecimo (6.5" x 4.25"), viii & 327 pages, with illustrations in text throughout. Later 19th century full green pebbled morocco lettered in gilt on the spine. All edges gilt.
Binding moderately rubbed, corners bruised, foxing mostly at pastedowns, endpapers, & early leaves, otherwise Very Good.
"Whatever may be the fate of this Poem, it has led the Author in many an after-dream through a beautiful country; and may not perhaps be uninteresting to those who have learnt to live in Past Times as well as Present, and whose minds are familiar with the Events and the People that have rendered Italy so illustrious ..." ~Excerpted from the Preface.
