Interview with Wayne Keil of Hooked on Books
- When did you get started in bookselling?
- 1975 in North Dakota.
- What drew you to bookselling?
- Both my wife and I are readers. I have a Master's Degree in Library Science. My wife is a CPA.
- Did you have any mentors in becoming a bookseller?
- Tom Johnson who introduced us to Pulp Magazines. Ernie the owner at that time of the bookstore in Fargo ND. who helped set us up with bookkeeping and initial stock.
- What are your specialties as a dealer?
- Mysteries and Science Fiction paperbacks but we sell all genres as well as TV and Movie Books, Calendars, Magazines, etc. Search service. Order for our customers.
- What's the most amazing book you've ever sold?
- Sex Gang by Paul Merchant (Harlan Ellison)
- What is your favorite part of being a bookseller?
- Finding the book the customer is looking for and listening to the stories why they are looking for it.
- Do you have an open storefront or have you in the past?
- We sell out of a house. We have had 2 storefronts and one mail-order business in the past.
- If so, do/did you have any bookstore pets?
- We had a dog when we did mail order.
- What is the funniest / strangest / scariest thing that ever happened in your store?
- We had a customer looking for a book with a particular cover. It had been published with two covers. The cover the customer was looking for had a woman in the foreground in a bathing suit with the beach in the background. We found that book for the customer. It turned out the woman on the cover was the customer's mother who was the model for the cover.
- What is your favorite bookshop (other than your own)?
- Blackwell's UK
- What do you personally like to read? Collect?
- Caper novels, books by Larry Kent, Garry Disher's Wyatt novels.

- Any of the Modesty Blaise novels by Peter O'Donnell. I would sell if I could find another copy of the book in question.
- What one book would you buy if price were no object?
- John Creasey's Dawn of Darkness if I could find a copy.
- If you were stranded on a desert island and could bring three books, what would they be?
- A Robert E. Howard Conan Book, a Modesty Blaise book by Peter O'Donnell, and a Saint book by Leslie Charteris.
