Over the course of his long career Bruce Davidson has travelled the world making reportage stories both on assignment as a member of the Magnum agency and on subjects of personal interest. A few years ago he returned to his archive of negatives housed in a room in his Manhattan apartment and began a ritual of revisiting each and every one of the stories he had made, from his work as a student in 1954 to his urban landscapes in Los Angeles in 2009. A meditation on American street photography, it juxtaposes the classic black-and-white series Women Are Beautiful by New York photographer Garry Winogrand (born 1928), first published in 1975, alongside On Street, partially unpublished black-and-white portraits of a model by German photographer and director Peter Lindbergh (born 1944), which were taken on the streets of New York during a fashion shoot. On 14 January 1958, the disfigured and amputated body of a man was discovered near Lake Sembako in Japan. Two investigators from Tokyo came to help out the local police in order to resolve what at first appeared to be a banal case, but which proved to be more complex. For the first time, a photographer, Yukichi Watabe, was authorized to accompany the police to document the investigation. Watabe followed the inspector as he questioned witnesses (workers in a tannery factory, local police officers, etc.) and pounded the streets of the most insalubrious neighbourhoods in Tokyo its bars, bridges, alleyways and hospitals in search of the killer.
