About RareTome

My wife and I have been engaged in selling books online for over a decade. We've both loved books since we were kids. We started this business when a friend bought a book store and told me the process of selling books online. I thought it sounded fascinating but I didn't like the idea of selling any/every book. My wife and I started finding collectible books and offering them for sale online; since then, we've been growing, both as a company and in our knowledge of the trade. Across our multiple channels we have well over 2,000 only positive reviews.

From antiquarian European collections to remote library sales, we continually search far and wide for high value reasonably priced books to offer customers. In essence, we are a finder service for collectible books. We continually dig through the many, many used books to find, and offer for sale, books that can be considered collectible. We strive to write descriptions and picture the books in a manner that clearly defines the book. We love reading our feedback because our customer's love their books and often provide smile inducing feeback.

Classic novels, literature, Bibles, ancient illuminated manuscripts, fore-edge painting art, rare, antique, signed, out-of-print, first edition, autographed, vintage books for sale; we sell it all.

Follow us on Instagram where we post interesting books almost daily - http://www.instagram.com/raretome/

Description:
Ingolstodt: Joannis Philippi Zink, 1678. Hardcover. Fair. Three poetical works of early 17th century Jesuit poets, bound into one binding with beautiful silver decorations covering the front and rear board. About the Literary Works - Three works are bound within: 1. 1672 De Cultu B. V. Mariae Elegiarum (in three books, not ""book three"" as it is often catalogued; all three ""libri"" are found within the printing) by Antoine Deslions. 2. No title page bound in (starts at A1, page 1) - Epigrammatum Selectrorum by Bernard Bauhuis 3. 1672 Silvulae Hendecasyllarborum by Jacob Bidermann About the Binding - No maker's mark is readily visible. The book was published in Ingolstadt, where the silversmith family of Kienlin (see book bindings attributed to Johann Adam Kienlin) plied their trade. It was common for bindings of this time to have a silver spine, but I see no hinges which indicate one might have been removed, and the leather of the spine was decorated. Still, a silv…Read more

Description:
Paris: Angot, 1677. Hardcover. Fair. Misc.. Well-illustrated, 1677 second French edition (reviewed and corrected from the first) René Descartes L'Homme (The Man) et la Formation du Foetus (Formation of the Fetus); and (added to this edition) Le Monde, ou Traité de la Lumiere (The World, or Treatise on the Light). This copy with the provenance of a noted scientist. A lot to unpack here; might I suggest that you review the Wikipedia articles on the Descartes works ""Treatise on Man"" and ""The World"". In extreme short (and, therefore, a poor description), there are three works of Descartes here, which blended science and philosophy. The treatise on The Man (and The Fetus) he didn't feel confident to publish after Galileo's condemnation, so they are here published only for the second time (corrected from the first edition) and they are not finished as Descartes didn't every prepare them for publication. They delve into Descartes theories on the body, it's mechanisms, and how the psychosomatic af…Read more

Description:
Chaumont-en-Bassigny: chez Quentin Mareschal, 1598. Hardcover. Fair. Joseph Boillot. The first edition of Joseph Boillot's unique and richly illustrated work on the use of gunpowder in warfare, in a handsome fresh leather binding (executed by Karen McGuire) with gilt spine tools alluding to an explosion. Boillot added ninety engravings (and one title page) to his work, which are lively and very interesting; perhaps, the most interesting engraving, is the devil giving the inventor of gunpowder a shoulder rub. This copy with 88 of the original 90 engravings, and two facsimiles to provide a complete record. This copy is missing three printed leaves (the title page, and two leaves at the end) and one blank (the last leaf), but I did print facsimile leaves, from a scanned online edition, on laid acid-free art paper and they are inserted (loose) so that you have the complete printed text, for reference. Those printed leaves are not meant to be replacements, but reference, as I imagine this will be a workin…Read more

Description:
London: J Hodges on London Bridge, R Baldwin at the Rose, 1753. Hardcover. Fair. Unknown. The 1753, sixth edition, ""with large additions"", of The Lady's Companion, Containing Upwards of Three Thousand recipes. For the time-period, the title page states ""Four Times the Quantity of any Book of this Sort"". This was a popular 18th century recipe book, 1st printed in 1737 as The Whole Duty of Women, but the title revised for the 1740 2nd addition, and the moralizing sections deleted. The recipe's include soups, dressing meats, puddings, pastries, pies, pickling, jellies, confections, beer, ales, wines, ""catchup"", etc.. Also with some instructions on buying at market, foods to serve at certain times of the year, etc. Illustrations include plates on the preparation of meats, a frontis showing a kitchen, and a series of fold-outs showing pastry decorations. Description:
London: Macmillan and Co., 1863. Hardcover. Fair. William Blake. Extra-illustrated with 50 additional plates, this is the first edition of Alexander Gilchrist's Life of William Blake, ""Pictor Ignotus"". Per the Contents pages, the Songs of Innocence and Experience are ""sixteen of the original plates"". A hand-written note at the front states that there are 50 extra plates; I have provided a breakdown of those plates below. Regarding these plates, I don't see impression marks, so while they are well executed, I do believe that they are produced via photo-lithographs (or some similar technique) and not from the original blocks. I suspect there is a book that was published in the early 1900s that produced these 50 illustrations, but I have been unable to find which one that is. The spines are damaged, but once removed from the slipcase, the bindings are handsome fine-binding, stamp signed by Bayntun bindery in Bath, England. About William Blake - William Blake (1757 –1827) was an E…Read more

Description:
Paris: Regnault, de Pre, 1531. Hardcover. Fair. Misc.. All three volumes of Jacques de Guise's Chronicles of Hainaut (but also Belgium, France, Germany, etc.); first editions, all. A well-used, but cared for copy. At the time of listing, several other sellers are offering the chronicles at approx. $5k U.S.. I'll price this copy at half that for the condition; a cost-effective opportunity to own an important 16th century European chronicle. De Guise’s history of Hainaut was written in Latin, circa 1380, and dedicated to Count Albert I of Hainaut. De Guise wrote that he was descended from a distinguished Hainaut family, from which many members had served the princes of Hainaut. De Guise was awarded the Doctor of Theology at the University of Paris. He turned to history of the region he knew best, Hainaut, because he had noticed that this history was not written, while several neighboring nations, long subject to Hainaut, had famous ones. De Guise produced his chronicle by exploring the memoirs and c…Read more

Description:
Milano: Paolo Gottardo Pontio, 1575. Hardcover. Fair. First and only edition of this rare discourse on love by the cavalier Pietro Paolo Porro. This copy from the Library of M. Guglielmo, sold by Sotheby and Wilkinson on the 18th of July, 1861. The shelfmark ""6334"", at the bottom of the spine, relates to the book's position in Guglielmo's library and was catalogued in the Sotheby catalogue of the sale the same (Part the Second, page 681). L'Eris D'Amore is laid-out as a dialogue between Vlassimo and Crisologo; in it they come to praise the women of the islands of Quito and Canaria for their beauty. The title page has a large printer's mark of the Knights of St. Lazarus. The book is dedicated to Charles Emmanuel of Savoy, Prince of Piedmont. This copy does not have the index that was printed at the end. Description:
Paris: Jodocuss Badius, 1524. Hardcover. Fair. An ancient history of the Jewish wars against Rome, incorporating Josephus' account, among others. This edition was published in Paris in 1524. Authorship is quite controversial. All seem to agree that there was a Hegesippus, but there is argument whether he put together this history of the Jewish wars, or (in true Darwinian thought) ancients didn't know how to spell and simpy bastardized Josephus' name. Older generations gave more credence to Hegesippus having his hand in the development of this work, hence his name in the title of this printing. About the Book - Universal Short Title Catalogue number 180971. Four copies listed, two in Canada and two in France. Worldcat records several other copies: OCLC number 588897219 at California State Library of Sacramento, OCLC number 3266117 at Wichita State University, Hebrew Union College and Harvard Library Interesting, the 3266117 states that title page border and title style were stolen from the Raga…Read more

Description:
Venice: Carampello, 1601. Softcover. Poor. Misc.. A working copy of the 1601 printing (Carampello, Venice) of I Quattro libri dell'Architettura di Andrea Palladio. This copy is missing the title page, and two blank leaves found at the end of books 2 and 4, but is otherwise complete. It is well-used, bearing testament that it has been referenced often in the previous four centuries. Despite the wear, it has been obviously repaired, and is holding together very well, with no loose leaves and easy to peruse. I did supply a facsimile of the title page, to size, printed on acid-free laid artist's paper, so that you can have the full context of the book. Andrea Palladio (1508 –1580) was an Italian Renaissance architect active in the Venetian Republic. Palladio, influenced by Roman and Greek architecture, primarily Vitruvius, is widely considered to be one of the most influential individuals in the history of architecture. While he designed churches and palaces, he was best known for country houses and vi…Read more

Description:
London: John Haviland, 1625. Hardcover. Fair. Scarce-to-market 1625 first edition of this influential work, Moses and Aaron, that went through (at least) twelve editions (Dictionary of National Biography, Godwin) in the 17th century. Godwin's text explored the historical concept of Judaism, Godwin arguing that only through this context could the Bible be truly understood. Godwin's stance was accepted and many schools adopted this work as a text-book. Godwin was an English headmaster and scholar, educated at Oxford, and the first fellow of Pembroke College. His treatise on Roman antiquities is also highly regarded. In Moses and Aaron, Godwin divides his work into six sections: Persons, Places, Times and Feasts, Idolatry, Consistories (systems of judgement) and Miscellaneous Rites. At the time of listing, one other copy is on the market, offered for $4,400 (Meir Turner, New York). Annotations - There is an interesting poem, handwritten, at page 170. Description:
New York: Dodd Mead and Company, 1895. Hardcover. Fair. Misc.. #44 of 100 copies, first edition, with a signed portrait of Joseph Jefferson and proof impressions of the illustrations. I've priced this copy at the price I would let it go for. Historically, the price of this book is lower. But I searched for years before finding a copy and, with only one hundred produced in 1895, it may be years before another copy reaches the market. And I really enjoy the book. The binding is relatively well known, and I know that others also treasure this edition. Joseph Jefferson adapted the Rip Van Winkle tale to stage, to awesome success. Opening in London, then moving it to the U.S. and performing it for forty years. This is the first printed edition (see title page) of Jefferson's adaption. Sarah Chauncey Woolsey (a.k.a. Susan Coolidge) wrote of watching the play in her novel In The High Valley: ""They straightway fell under the spell of a magician who has enchanted many thousands before them, and for …Read more

Description:
London: Thomas Dawson for Thomas Adams, 1615. Hardcover. Poor. 1615 edition of John Stow's Annales or Generall Chronicle of England. This edition augmented to 1614 by Edmond Howes. Also, includes an Appendix of the Universities of Cambridge, Oxford and London. On page 811 there is an early mention of ""William Shakespeare gentleman"", as an Elizabethan poet. About the Chronicles - In 1580, Stow published the more expansive The Chronicles of England, from Brute unto this present yeare of Christ, 1580. He later developed this into the still more substantial The Annales of England, of which editions appeared in 1592, 1601, and 1605 – the last being continued to 26 March 1605, or within ten days of Stow's own death. Edmund Howes issued in 1615 an expanded version of Stow's well-known Annales or Chronicle, with an historical preface, and a continuation from 1600, the date of the last edition, to 1615. According to Howes's own account, Archbishop Whitgift had suggested this task to him, and he receiv…Read more

The first printed edition of Scribonius' Compositiones, as edited by Ruel and printed by Simon du Bois and Chrestian Wechel in 1528 (per colophon). Also with Celsus' De Medicina by the same printer. Venice: Johannes de Tridino Tacuinus, 1503. Softcover. Good. Scarce, 1503 (3rd edition) of Polydore Vergil's collection of Latin Proverbs, Proverbiorum Libellus; Polydore was the first to print a collection of Latin Proverbs. Erasmus' claimed he was the first with Adagia (1500), for many years at rivalry with Polydore for priority, before, it seems, acquiescing and striking up a friendship. Vergil's proverbs first appeared in 1498, with a second edition in 1500. The 1503 edition was the first edition printed by Johannes de Tridino. I have compared to the editions, and Tridino's layout is similar, but he did reset the text with some small changes to layout. 306 proverbs taken from classical sources. “An assemblage of sayings derived from the writings of the ancient classics, but there are several which have come down to us and are accepted proverbs in our own literature, such as Pares cum paribus: Aequalem tibi mulierem inquire: Pupilla oculi nobis charius: Ovem lupo commisisti…” – Engli…Read more

Strasbourg: Schurer, 1518. Hardcover. Good. G.Z.. Scarce to auction and market, a 1518 Schurer printing of Sabellicus' last work, known as the Exempla, with ten books on examples to Christians in the style of Valerius Maximus. Of interest, a Venetian priest known as Egnazio had gained fame in rivalry with Sabellicus (circa 1500-1506). For example, in 1502 he published critical comments on Sabellicus' interpretations of the classics. When Sabellicus passed, in 1507, he entrusted the manuscript of this work to Egnazio, requesting that he edit and publish it. Egnazio's introduction still can be found in this 1518 edition. Description:
Antwerp: Plantin, 1584. Softcover. Fair. Petrus van der Borcht, Paul Uten Waele. A handsome and well-regarded richly illustrated devotional work, issued (by the venerable Plantin press) in two books (with separate title pages), in a small personal size, with many of the woodcuts designed by Petrus van der Bocht and engraved by Paulus Wtewael. This copy collates complete (although the first title page is a little rough), which is harder to find; at the time of listing this book, other copies on the market note missing pages, which may reflect the nice illustrations, personal use size and daily assignments making it easy to withdraw a page and give it to a friend, loved one, or keep the page for oneself for special reasons related to a date.
