all in all a nice and very accesable volume and a pretty period binding

Barnard Mandeville publised a pamphlet on "the Grumbling Hive" in 1705. this was included in The Fable of the Bees in which itself went through six editions and imortant additions
A second volume was published in 1729 in the form of a dialogue between Horatio and Cleomenes and presents a proposed history of civil society based upon his views of human nature.
Mandeville was a leading publicintellectual of the early 1700's. His influence continues of a founder of Libertarianism, Hayek himself a follower. In the eighteenth century his respondents and critics is a long list including Adam Smiith and Rousseau.
His thesis that Vice was a productive force in the economic wellbeing of a comunnity seems harmless on its face but Mandeville presented his view while critiqueing his own society both in its moral hypocricy and the failure to produce results
The poem named The Grumbling Hive" was published as a pamphle in 1714, the as book, the" Fable of the Bees"in 1720.

A nice little piece of regional Americana in a good contemporary retail binding at the start of the industrial age. It is bound in polished sheep in great condition and marbled at the original bindingThe acid-free slipcase was covered in local pastepaper. four violets were pressed in it and enveloped inside the rear board. The list of upstate villages with their book outlets or stationers indicates the burgeonong transformation of the coming industrial revolution. Nice artifact for the gardener.

The book is quarter bound in Hewit calf with vellum corners and bds in hand mbl paper. Red calf label. Made ends with Shepherds 19th cent, restoration paper. The top edge is gilt and the book retains its sewn endbands. It had been disbound and the current binding was the last made at the Water Street Bindery.

The first of two Hamner editions notable for its illustrations and being the first Oxford edition. Each volume weghs in at six pounds and it is handsomely printed. Good paper, but foxed as usual, the text and illustrations are easily accesable

five plates bound at rear and folding plate frts. The folding plate has been backed with a vivsibly compatable tissue to strengthen folds. The voume was shaken with bds detaching, so the sewing was relined and the case strengthened with repair paper and reattached. It is now perfectly accessable.

A bit of an early scientific volume for the young and known for its excellent hand colored steel engravings of shells, ten of them.
The original spine had deteriorated and the boards hanging so it was rebacked in sheep. There is an added leather label, original unknown
