18 Henrietta Street, Bath, 5 January 1816. 2 pp. 9 x 7 inches, minor defects only, with the address leaf. Uncommon. Lieutenant-General Thomas Joseph Backhouse (Manila 1764 - 1821) served in the American War (1780) and the West Indies, He saw distinguished service in the Montevideo Campaign (1806-07). He later commanded the garrison at Bombay.

Newman Street, 20 February 1815. 3 pp. 9 x 7 inches, in fine condition, traces of guard where formerly mounted. John Bacon (1777-1859), sculptor. His father died in 1799, and John Bacon, junior, succeeded to his business. He finished such works as he found in progress, including the well-known statue of Lord Cornwallis, and managed to secure ample patronage for himself. There are six of his monuments in St. Paul's Cathedral, and some in Westminster Abbey. “I should also take the liberty to ask for the inscription to Sir John Moore; but as that Monument will be placed upon the floor of the church, we are not impeded in the erection of that by the want of the inscription, as we are in the other instances referred to.”

He served as a commissioner in Victoria, Australia, the West Indies, Malta and Canada. Author of New Homes For The Old Country. A Personal Experience of The Political and Domestic Life, The Industries, and The Natural History of Australia and New Zealand.

Sandford Orleigh, 3 September 1899. 6 pp.7 x 4 inches, remains of tape where formerly mounted, in very good condition. The uncommon autograph of Lady Florence Baker, wife of the explorer Sir Samuel Baker, famous for his African discoveries. Lady Florence was the subject of a book by Pat Shipman, ‘To the Heart of the Nile: Lady Florence Baker and the Exploration of Central Africa’ [2004].

162 New Bond Street [28 November 1878]. 3 pp. 6 x 4 inches, in good condition. With Silber’s receipt stamp and annotated in pencil: ‘Sent this day with other goods, 28/11/78’. Sir Samuel White Baker (1821-93), explorer in Africa. His books include Cyprus As I Saw It In 1879.

Whittinghame, 13 December 1895. 2 pp. 7 x 4 inches, in good condition, some lightness of ink completing the signature. Alice Blanche Balfour (1850-1936), Scottish entomologist, naturalist, scientific illustrator and one of the earliest pioneers in the science of genetics. Her brother, Arthur Balfour, became Prime Minister. In 1895 she published the book Twelve Hundred miles in a Waggon.

Postmarked 27 June 1914. Card, about 4 x 3 inches. Lady Frances Balfour (1858-1931) was one of the highest-ranking members of the British aristocracy to assume a leadership role in the women's suffrage movement. From 1896 to 1914, she was the president of the National Society for Women's Suffrage. A non-violent suffragist, she was opposed to the militant actions of the Women's Social and Political Union.

83 Great King Street, Edinburgh, 15 August 1846. 2 pp. 7 x 4 inches, with signature on integral leaf, in good condition. John Hutton Balfour (1808-1884), botanist, Keeper of the Royal Botanic Garden and Queen’s botanist for Scotland. He was the first in Edinburgh to introduce classes for practical instruction in the use of the microscope.

Edinburgh, 1873. 1 page 8 x 5 inches, a little dusty, small corner tear. Uncommon. James Ballantine (1806 – 1877), Scottish artist and author. His 1845 book ‘A Treatise of Stained Glass’ became a standard work.
