The boards panelled with a wide twisted ribbon roll inside a two line roll. The spines gilt between wide flat bands, lettered in the second and fourth compartments. Minor shelf wear only. The text is clean and tight with light offsetting from the plates. A handsome set.

London; Hatchards, 187, Piccadilly,, 1878.. 1878 viii, 392 p. Two real photographic plates. 19 cms. Dark green cloth over bevelled boards, decorated iin black and gilt on the front board and spine. Minor rubs on the edges and spine ends and the final text leaves with some spotting, otherwise a very good copy. The history section is only 25 p. The rest of the text is devoted to detailed catalogues of the flora and fauna of the parish. There are occasional ink marginalia from the 1940s, mostly sightings in Herts. Scarce.

Cagle 639 where the pagination is given wrongly although the collation is given correctly. 19cm. Later grey paper covered boards with the original printed label. Minor shelfwear on corners. Internally clean and crisp. Trimmed at the head only. A very good copy. The Preface to the Second Edition states 'Every Receipt in this work has been carefully revised for this Edition ... A considerable number of new Receipts have also been added ...' An important survey of Scottish culinary habits at the end of the Georgian era. Published the same year as the first edition, this issue is particularly scarce. Cagle is the only culinary bibliography to list it. He was unable to locate a copy in any library and had to rely on information provided to NUC by the Library Company of Philadelphia. There is a copy in National Library of Scotland.

The endpapers shoe browning from contact with the boards. Internally this is a clean, tight copy. The 6th edition was the last revision of the text to appear in Darwin's lifetime.

Contemporary half calf with marbled bords and endpapers. Spine gilt with wide, flat bands and a contrasting label. Leather with minor rubs only. Ownership inscription dated 1842 in pencil, with the same genrleman's occasional faint marginal marks also in pencil. A very good copy of this classic angling text.
