London: Michael Joseph, 1946. FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION, 4to, pp. 54, [2] + colour frontispiece and 3 colour plates. Numerous illustrations in blue and black within the text. Original blue boards, spine lettered in white, front board blocked in black and white, dustjacket printed in blue, black, and white with colour illustration on front panel. Slight bubbling to cloth, dustjacket somewhat worn at extremities with a more substantial tear and chipping at head of spine.

Lugano: G. Ruggia e C., 1833. FIRST ITALIAN EDITION, 8vo, pp. [iv], 458 + frontispiece. Untrimmed in contemporary Italian quarter vellum with marbled boards, spine lettered in black. Foxed throughout. A touch of wear to extremities. First Italian translation of this biography of Joachim Murat, brother-in-law to Napoleon and erstwhile king of Naples, first published in French in 1828.

Later half calf, textured cloth boards, spines divided by raised bands between gilt rules, red morocco labels, 4th compartments numbered direct in gilt, edges sprinkled red and blue. A bit rubbed and scratched, one joint slightly cracking at head. Armorial bookplates with initial ‘T’ to pastedowns. This copy of Galt’s novel was owned by a Marquess and a member of the Order of the Thistle - possibly William Hay, (1826-1911), 10th Marquess of Tweeddale.

Later half morocco by Ramage, marbled boards, spine divided by raised bands, 2nd and 4th compartments lettered in gilt direct, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Binding unevenly sunned. A handsome example of the first edition of Scottish novelist John Galt’s best-remembered work, which reached a second edition the following year.

Near-contemporary half black calf, marbled boards, spine divided by double gilt rules and lettered in gilt direct, edges sprinkled red. Some spotting and scattered toning. Somewhat rubbed, light wear to extremities. Half-title inscribed ‘From the Author’, ownership inscription of to flyleaf. The first edition of Scottish novelist John Galt’s best-remembered work, which reached a second edition the following year. This copy has a presentation inscription, probably secretarial, to the half-title.

Glocester [Gloucester]: Printed and sold by S. Harward, 1783. 8vo, pp. viii, 268. Contemporary sheep, spine divided by raised bands between gilt rules, spine lettered in ink. Some light spotting, upper blank margin of title-page excised. Binding rubbed and a little worn at extremities, front flyleaf excised. Ownership inscriptions dated 1799 and 1836 to front pastedown. A rare provincial printing of Gay’s fables - ESTC locates just three copies, BL, Oxford, and Cambridge. ESTC T13862.

London: Printed for Vernor, Hood, and Sharpe, 1810. 12mo, pp. [iv], 247, [1, ads]. Original tan paper boards, spine lettered in ink. Some spotting and light soiling. Binding rubbed and soiled, spine partially defective, joints cracked but holding, no flyleaves.

[Liverpool], 1945. Quarto feint-ruled notebook, pp. [14, blank], 15-43, [1], [c. 150 blanks]. About 30 pages neatly filled in blue, black, and blue-black ink, most entries dated though the precision drops off towards the end. Original green textured paper boards backed in red cloth. Spine a little sunned. The author identified in pencil on the first leaf by the bookseller who acquired his collection of books. Geoffrey Berrington Jones took his BArch from Liverpool in the 1940s, was elected ARIBA in 1950, then in the late 1950s moved to Edinburgh, becoming ARIAS in 1960. While studying for his degree (taught by Herbert Thearle) he kept this short journal, which happens to coincide with the final months of the European front of the Second World War. A few tiny areas of rubbing, particularly to joints. Ownership inscription of Ruth H. Munro Scott dated 1943 to endpapers, along with a gift inscription to Rosalie in the same hand dated 1944 in vol. 1. An attractive copy of an early reprint of this anthology, edited by Charles Gibbon (1843-1890) and first published 1873-4.

Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, spines divided by triple gilt rules, lettered and tooled in gilt, edges sprinkled red. A hint of spotting. Bindings rubbed, joints of first volume cracking but sound, gilt rubbed away from spines. Armorial bookplates of K. Somerville to front pastedowns. The first edition of prolific Scottish writer George Robert Gleig’s (1796-1888) third work of fiction, published while he served as chaplain at Chelsea Hospital. It was his first novel published as such under his own name, following an anonymous story and his best known work, a collection of articles based on his experiences in the Peninsular War, along with various non-fiction books.

Preston: Akros Publications, 1977. NO. 218 OF 300 COPIES SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, small 4to, pp. 12, [2]. Original red card wrappers printed in black Front wrapper a little marked to spine edge. Folded compliments slip from the author loosely inserted. An essay published for the 85th birthday of Hugh MacDiarmid by his long-time supporter, the poet and publisher Duncan Glen. This copy has a compliments slip loosely inserted from Glen dated 27/8/77, in which he thanks a Mr Beresford for his continued support.

Printed addenda et corrigenda sheet loosely inserted. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, buff dustjacket printed in green and black, top edge gilt. Spotting to textblock edge. Boards a little mottled, dustjacket chipped to spine-ends and unevenly toned. Ownership inscription of R.B. Gosskey to pastedown dated February 1939, double-sided manuscript letter addressed to Dr Gosskey loosely inserted.

Wellingborough: September Press, 1988. ONE OF 480 COPIES from an edition of 600, printed by offset lithography on St Cuthbert’s half-rag mould-made paper. Original black cloth boards, brown morocco label to spine, cream cloth slipcase. Spine very slightly sunned. The finest facsimile of Gill’s classic work, on mould-made rather than hand-made paper but losing little of the original’s brightness.

Waltham Saint Lawrence: Golden Cockerel Press, 1923. NO. 99 OF 320 COPIES, 8vo, pp. 46, [4]. Colour woodcut frontispiece and 2 colour woodcut plates included in pagination. Original pale blue boards backed in ecru cloth, paper label to spine. Binding a little soiled and toned. Bookplate of Francis E. Bliss to pastedown. An early work from the Golden Cockerel Press, with attractive woodcuts by Ethelbert White which were nevertheless unpopular with press proprietors Hal and Gay Taylor, and were ‘universally condemned’ (Cave and Manson, History of The GCP, p. XXX). This led directly to White’s replacement by Robert Gibbings in the Taylors’ next project and Gibbings’ subsequent acquisition and stewardship of the press over the next decade. Some light foxing to plates. Spines slightly sunned, extremities a touch rubbed, a few light scratches.

Ownership inscription of J.B. Locke dated 1869 to flyleaf, two inscriptions to title-page crossed out, maginal inscription to p. 162 partially-erased. The antiquary Alexander Gordon (c.1692-1754?) was inspired to investigate the Roman antiquities of Scotland by dismissive remarks of William Stukeley’s concerning Scots interest in antiquity, and enabled by the patronage of the eighth earl of Pembroke. Inscribed by Antony Gormley to the half-title: ‘to Gail, Antony Gormley’, additional signature of Hugh Brody beneath. A book documenting the genesis, creation and instillation of 51 metal sculptures on the bed of Lake Ballard, in Western Australia. This copy is signed both by the artist and by anthropologist Hugh Brody, who contributes the first essay in the book.
