Publisher's elaborately gilt red morocco, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. 4 full-page chromolithographed plates with tissue-guards (including frontispiece), 3 colour-printed folding maps at rear, 22 wood-engraved plates, and over 200 wood engravings in the letterpress. Ownership stamp in red of G. Chambron to f.f.e.p. A superb copy. First edition of this substantial work, in the most lavish form of the available publisher's bindings. Paul Gaffarel (1843-1920), French historian, was on faculty of Letters at Dijon, and wrote a number of works on French colonial interests, including in the Americas. The chromolithographs were executed by Nordmann after paintings by Legrand based on designs by Waret and Garcia. The engravings are from a variety of sources.

Liverpool: Published as the Act directs by M.A. Gage, March 1st, 1836.. FIRST EDITION. Large hand-coloured decorative engraved plan of Liverpool (100 x 170 cm, overall 104 x 175 cm) showing administrative divisions or wards, buildings, street layout and the docklands on the River Mersey. Engraved by Thomas Starling after Gage, dissected into 40 panels and backed onto linen, folding into contemporary slipcase of maroon morocco stamped in blind and lettered in gilt. Embellished with calligraphic cartouche, compass rose, prominent Greek-key and foliate border, the Liverpool City crest, and William the Fourth's coat of arms. Ownership inscription of Grosvenor Bartelot. Some minor offsetting, small loss to upper right margin not affecting map, generally an excellent example. A slightly smaller issue was published in London in August of the same year.

Original colour-printed plan of the London Underground (15 x 22.5 cm), verso printed in blue and red with index, folding twice as issued into a single pamphlet. An excellent clean copy. Paul E. Garbutt (1919-2008) was an English railroad man and transit worker active in the middle part of the 20th century. Garbutt was born in Westcliff-on-Sea. After graduating from school in 1934, he took work with the London, Scotland, and Midland Railway. After World War II, he transition to the London Underground where he is credited with redesigning the London Underground map in 1962 to conform stylistically to the conventions established by Harry Beck in 1931. He can also be credited with the distinctive bottle shape of the Circle Line.
