Johnson Hagood (1829-1898) rose from private to Brigadier General during the course of the war. He served as governor of South Carolina from 1880-82.

Covers moderately worn, especially at top and bottom edges of front board, endpapers and flyleaves browned, inoffensive dampstain at top of last 50 or so leaves, text else quite clean.. Original brown cloth stamped in gilt and blind, octavo, (xvi), 474 pp. + advertisement leaf at rear. Wood-engraved illustrations in the text. Publisher’s printed advert for "The Watchman" tipped opposite title page. Binder's title is "Mrs. Hale's New Cook Book;" which title was published in 1857 with the same text as "The Ladies' New Book of Cookery." Bitting p. 209; Cagle #312; Lowenstein #555.

A fictional account of a recent immigrant's humorous acclimation to Southern California. Originally published in 1908, this printing adds several pages, no doubt bringing the story "Down to Date."
