VG(-)/Good+. 14.5 Cm x 22 Cm. xii+397, 4 genealogical tables (one a double-page unfolding chart ex-pagination), main flaw is that previous owner has inscribed his 1962 signature 4 times - very small on front endpaper, then in more flourishing style on half-title and t.p. below title, and finally, small and undated, on top edge of textblock - and a very fine signature it is I suppose except for being quite tantalizingly indecipherable (though I suspect surname is 'Courtenay'), otherwise only flaw is faint brown flecking to fore-edge. Black cloth covers clean, bright and unworn, clipped jacket clean but edge-worn with darkened spine, thin chip across top spine and small chip to top edge.. Jacket unclipped and clean, short internally closed nick by top fr. spine, top edge slightly curling, will add protective sleeve when ordered whihc will flatten this, but small white triangular chip at bottom of closed nick. 10 chapters by various authors opening with one by editor. Apparently scarce in UK and non-ex lib. 16 cm x 24 cm

Despite faults a nice copy of this Herbartian text.

Red cloth with gilt sp. lettering, pristine. 266 pp.; fr. end-paper has stamp 'Bequeathed by Professor Donald McKinnon (sic)', verso t.p. has stamp 'Department of Philosophy/ University of Aberdeen with number 3638, no other lib. mark, slipped in is Cambridge Bookseller Galloway & Porter's original invoice to Prof. D.M. MacKinnon dated 1968 - so presumably hardly avidly read by Aberdeen philosophers! Unclipped jacket in protective sleeve as acquired. MacKinnon was Regius Professor of Moral Philosophy at Aberdeen from 1947 - the Wikipedia entry on him describes a colourful charismatic character and profound theologian. This is entirely in German except for front cover and wraparound blurb of sleeve. 14.5 cm x 23.5 cm

VG-. 15 Cm x 23 Cm. xii+484, 2 unf.tables; uncut edges, browning to endpapers, half-title and last p., in at least two places a strip along bottom edge of facing pp.is apparently dust-stained, also bottom t.p.,but this is only a minor, and somewhat inexplicable, fault especially as half-title/t.p. top edge is unopened. Internally clean, tight & unmarked otherwise in minimally worn covers, generally clean but a few surface marks and patches of sl.discol.to front. Not perfect but despite faults still rates near VG. An important work, largely forgotten until Rodney Needham's 1967 reissue which anticipated later anthropological ideas regarding analysis of kinship.

Good-VG. 13.5 Cm x 20 Cm. viii+343, early ink sig.top t.p., quite inoffensive ('W.H.Rupell'), end gutters cracked but secure, otherwise internally clean, tight & unmarked, no foxing but merest hint of edge browning to t.p., covers clean and minimally worn, sl.sp.end & corner rubbing only, textured cloth with multiple blind-stamped border lines. An important and pioneering work by this modest English solicitor-turned-anthropologist (1835-1910) who died in poverty in Chicago. The best account of him is Rodney Needham's Introduction to his 1967 re-issue of Wake's 1889 'Development of Marriage and Kinship'. The phrase 'comparative psychology' refers to comparison between peoples, not, as now, between humans and animals.
