They are assessed and re-evaluated in terms of the the artist's whole achievement. He was a friend of Arthur Streeton and Tom Roberts, and is nearly as well known. He was also a prolific and popular illustrator and printmaker. In 1918 the Australian Government choose him as one of its first official war artists.
