Dr. John Carroll, Bishop of Baltimore, as the first Roman Catholic Bishop in the United States in 1790, from a generally Protestant viewpoint. Dampstained. Bound in original light blue paper wrapper. Samuel Hollingsworth, S.T.D., (once rector of St. James, Greenfield Mass.) and old bookseller's label from R. Grant & Son, Edinburgh, on front endpapers. Bound in original dark bluish cloth over cardstock with patterned boards and front board with gilt title. The front hinge is weak and there is a slight loss to head of the spine. A very nice contemporary lithograph of this famous celebration at the conclusion of the Spanish-American War. When the armored cruiser New York (ACR-02), the flagship of Rear Admiral Sampson; the armored cruiser Brooklyn (ACR-3), the flagship of Rear Admiral Schley; the battleships Massachusetts (BB-02), Oregon (BB-03), Iowa (BB-04), Indiana (BB-01) and Texas began their parade through New York Bay and up the North River, they were surrounded by a numerous excursion boats and tugs. The ships (battle scarred from the Battle of Santiago de Cuba) were decked with bunting and when the fleet reached Grant's tomb, the guns that spoke at Santiago were again heard in a grand national salute of 21 guns.

Cromo N.B. was founded in Milan in 1927 by Nino Basevi. In 1988, Cromo N.B. moved from its historical headquarters in Milan to Bareggio. Many significant (traditionally mostly Italian) artists have worked for Cromo N.B. All the designs published by Cromo N.B. are original.

St. Alphonsus Ligouri (1696-1787) organized the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists), devoted to mission work, in 1732. The Congregation flourished, its mission expanded, and by 1832, it had made tentative missionary efforts to the United States. The Congregation flourished in the United States, and in 1875 the original American province was divided, the eastern under the name of the province of Baltimore and the western as the province of St. Louis, which embraced the houses of St. Louis, New Orleans, Chicago and Chatawa (initially selected for the novitiate and house of studies for the province of St. Louis, but subsequently abandoned. Pages toned, but otherwise pages are clean and free from soiling, spotting and marking. Bound in publisher's red cloth with black lettering and decoration. Covers lightly worn, and a few areas of light discoloration. Front hinge weak, and title page detached but present. A very good copy of this scarce collection of anecdotes concerning interactions with American Indians and the campaigns of General Custer.

Covers with deeply embossed decorative borders surrounding gilt geometrical border. Front cover with bone onlay of a cross and anchor. Covers lightly rubbed. A splendidly bound and nicely illustrated Czech Catholic Prayer book. A scarce imprint that survived both World Wars and the Socialist (Communist) era.
