Excellent portrayal of life on the clipper ships and nice illustrations of several of them. As a mere cadet, Perry served on the City of Pekin, the Colon, the Aculpuco, the Colima, the Granada, the City of Panama. Serving as First Mate on the Continental, Captain Clark, the captain became ill due to poisoning; Perry then sailed the ship from Rio to San Francisco, after the crew raised hell due to Perry's youth. Light pencil annotations in the margins of the biography and very occasionally elsewhere; lower edges lightly rubbed; corners a trifle bumped; damp stain to lower board of Vol. III; a few leaves minimally foxed. The UW professor's account of the Canwell Committee witch hunt, whose kangaroo court was more representative of Stalin's Soviet tactics than the misidentified "communist plot" it purported to expose. Contains a whodunit aspect involving a hotel register that would have shown Rader and his wife were staying at the Canyon Creek Lodge, near Granite Falls, and not at, as accused, a communist training camp. If one looks closely, a copy of this book rests on the desk of the character played by Dustin Hoffman in "Marathon Man," shown as research for his thesis "Tyranny in America." That's one of the few instances of product-placement of which we approve. Increasingly uncommon in this exemplary condition. Dust jacket now protected in a clear, removable archival sleeve.

In the color illustrated dust jacket with price $2.50 intact on the front flap: edges worn, with short closed tears to the upper edge of rear panel. An American is "victim of that last flash of passion which brings false youth to a woman" as she negotiates opportunities and pitfalls in London society.
