Description:
Undated. 40 lines on 1 page 13 x 8 inches, with corrections, light creasing. Richard Cobden (1804-65), statesman. When Cobden visited Egypt in 1836, on behalf of a Lancashire calico factory, he wrote letters to his sisters and friends, extracts of which are printed in John Morleys Life of Richard Cobden. I was startled too on observing that whilst the mouth, which was partially concealed beneath his white beard & moustache, put on the semblance of laughter, the eyes were all the while peering coldly from beneath their heavy brows with an expression quite opposite to that of unguarded mirth. Description:
Trinity College Cambridge, Hermitage, University Club, 1823-24 & c.1830. 5 pages, seal tears, generally good. Typed transcript. Ex Michael Silverman Collection, Bonhams, 2011. Sir Thomas Erskine Perry (1806 1882), Liberal politician and judge in India. After serving as chief justice of the supreme court in Bombay and as a Member of Parliament in Britain, he served as a member of the Council of India for 21 years. I must pay some of my bills in London, they are continually dunning me, and independently of the bore, it is rather a disgrace. I met Johny Dingwall & his wife the other day at the French play. The sweet beef is more gross and greasy than ever, whilst his lady looks very charming and fascinating. The pair look like nothing else but a plat of fat boiling beef side by side to a delicate little entree of cotelettes dagneau ...

Description:
London, 5 November 1819. 3 pp. 9 x 8 inches, with the address panel, signed for free postage. William Smith (17561835) , abolitionist, Member of Parliament. He was a friend and close associate of William Wilberforce and a member of the Clapham Sect of social reformers, and was in the forefront of many of their campaigns for social justice, prison reform and philanthropic endeavour, most notably the abolition of slavery. He was the maternal grandfather of pioneer nurse and statistician Florence Nightingale. ... these mistakes, the having to think about them, & the chance of losing as well as not getting parts, as well as their running into endless length, have made me resolve almost never to subscribe to anything of the kind.

Description:
Montpelier Square, Brompton, 23 March 1848. 4 pp. 9 x 7 inches, in very good condition. The Rev. Dr John Morison (1791 - 1859) was a longstanding editor of the Evangelical Magazine & Missionary Chronicle, author of theological and biographical subjects, and a Congregational pastor at Trevor Chapel, Chelsea, London. He was known for his bold and fervid utterances on the platform, his enthusiastic advocacy of the work of the London Missionary Society, and support for the abolition of slavery in the USA. A little circle of friends here all warmly attached to the London Missionary Society, have thought that the success of my son-in-law, Dr Legge, in the conversion of the three Chinese youths, who have soo beautifully sustained their Christian profession, was an event worthy of some specific memorial. Nothing so striking has hitherto occurred in the history of our Society.
