Photos of children of various ages engaged in numerous activities, these are often quite charming, one of 'haymaking' as a pleasurable work-activity brings home how much things have changed. A really excellent copy of this work, issued in the collectable Cambridge Manuals of Science and Literature series with its attractive series binding. Tight, clean and completely unmarked in bright virtually unworn and - unusually in my experience - unfaded covers. Includes discussions of solar, wave, wind and geothermal energy sources - obviously before its time!

Good (+). 17.5 Cms x 21 Cms. f/piece w.tissue guard+248, most pp.with (sometimes large) engraving of animal in question, f/piece is of 'a group of monkeys'; 1863-dated gift inscrip. fr,endpaper, plus a 1948 dated sig., otherwise clean and unmarked but gutters cracked in half-a-dozen places, only two being serious, hence textblock feels shaken; covers generally clean but num.patches of red pigment loss, a few v.small surface scrapes and occ. darkening elsewhere, fr.cover has central gilt picture of small girl reading book on animals with a kitten, vase and ark-like boat - caged bird dangling from above. This appears to be exceptionally scarce among Wood's usually highly popular and prolific output.
