Description:
New York: Rinehart and Co., 1948. First Edition, First issue with Rinehart logo on copyright page, jacket without the Rinehart quote. 8vo, original black cloth printed in white on the spine, printed dustjacket with Mailer’s photograph on the rear panel. (8), 721 pp. Internally a very good and well preserved copy with only minor mellowing and some dusting to the page edges. The cloth good only with the spine panel loose from the front board but still whole and attached to the back, some wear to the board edges and corners, dustjacket in good order with very little wear or aging. NORMAN MAILER’S FIRST BOOK AND ARGUABLY STILL ONE OF HIS BEST. Long considered one of the best novels to come out of World War II, and the best to come out of America. It caused a sensation on its initial publication; critics compared the 25-year-old author to Tolstoy and catapulted him to instant literary celebrity. Mailer uses extensive flashbacks and brutally frank battle scenes to tell the story of… Read More

Description:
New York: Rinehart and Co., 1948. First edition, first issue with the Rinehart logo on copyright page, and in the first state jacket with the introductory "word from the publisher" by Stanley Reinhart on the flaps. Thick 8vo, in the publisher's original black cloth printed in white on the spine, and in the first state dustjacket. (8), 721 pp. A very good and handsome copy of this important work, the text is quite clean and fresh for this book which was printed on paper still of the War Standards type, so is normally mellowed. The black cloth is vivid with no fading, a little flaking to the black at the tips and corners, hinges tight. The first-state jacket is essentially complete, having only a tiny bit of chipping at the top of the rear fold and back cover and the price neatly clipped, some normal rubbing and age, the fading which is very common on the spine of this title is really quite mild in this copy's case, though present. FIRST EDITION AND FIRST ISSUE OF NORMAN MAILER’S FIRST… Read More

He made his headquarters at Raiatea, but also visited the Cook Islands and discovered Rarotonga, where he sojourned for a considerable time. He voyaged to Samoa, Tonga and the neighboring islands. London: Sir Richard Phillips, 1823. First Edition. 8vo, disbound. 112. A very bright, clean and well preserved copy, partially unopened. RARE. A descriptive account of the author’s experiences as a merchant seaman. Includes some vivid passages about a near-catastrophic gale encountered while sailing from Madras to Cuddalore, and observations on Indian and Chinese cultural practices. “The only edition of this description of a visit to New South Wales in 1818 and one of surprisingly few accounts of a voyage on a convict transport. Cramp explains that the "scarcity of employment in England determined me again to try my fortune abroad". He found a place on the convict transport Tottenham, which struck a reef shortly after leaving Woolwich, and then transferred to the Lady Castlereagh, which at 842 tons was the largest convict ship of its time.
