Description:
A 7 3/4" x 5 1/4" suede cover with suede tie binding. The cover is pyrography decorated and depicts the exterior and grounds of the Northfield Chateau. The journey begins with the traveler leaving Springfield MA at 3:30 pm on July 3, 1898. Based on the content of the 20 pencil written pages it appears that the gentleman was attending a religious retreat with numerous lectures. The writer describes content of the lectures and his interpretations. The retreat was apparently also attended by his son. The writing concludes with "Enjoyed being with my boy up here and it was sure good food for thought that has found a resting place in my heart". First and last page heavily toned from acid leaching from the leather. The chateau was designed by noted architect Bruce Price (of the Ch teau Frontenac) for Francis Robert Schell, a New York capitalist attracted by his interest in Dwight Lyman Moody's work at the nearby Northfield Seminary and Mount Hermon School. It was completed in 1903 on grounds of 125 acres.

Description:
1870. Very good; some wear to binding, a couple scraps loose, occasional offsetting.. A Victorian scrapbook with fine examples of early (i.e. 1830s and 1840s) scraps, with a range of others that can be dated as late as 1877. Larger lithographic prints have been repurposed as pastedowns, and several other large prints (mostly lithographed, some engraved) have been pasted throughout. Of more interest are the dozens of early lithographed scraps that have been carefully cut from the original whole sheets: small hand-colored butterflies and moths flit throughout the pages, alongside clusters of botanical lithographs of berries and flowers. One page features twelve small square lithographs which depict an eclectic mix of scenes, including a saddle-fitter at work and a dog rescuing a man buried in snow. Horses and equestrian-themed lithographs appear to be a favorite. Almost all are hand-colored. Folio (12" by 9"), approx. 100 unnumbered leaves. 18 with content, plus a few additional scraps tucked in.… Read More

Description:
[Albany, New York], 1892. Good to very good. Toned with dust soiling, upper board detached. Staining from adhesive used.. A charming scrap book laden with humor and personality of Mrs. Anthony M. Gibson of Tolland/Rockville, Connecticut. Exceptional for the sheer amount of insight it provides into someone who was clearly a good-natured and playful person. Includes early ink caption/labels. Contains the following ephemera: photos; newspaper clippings; a pressed flower; manuscript letters; and one chromolithographed trade card depicting a stylized Romantic poet. We can glean that Mrs. Gibson was a member of the Woman's Relief Corps, visited upstate New York occasionally, enjoyed seafood and cartoons, and fancied her husband well into their long marriage (several photos of him are included). The majority of the newspaper clippings appear to be sourced from Tolland/Rockville or Hartford, Connecticut publications, where she lived. A photo of her and her husband have been sweetly adhered to the first leaf… Read More
