About This Item

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 2001 . First edition. Hardback. Near Fine/Near Fine. 8.5" by 5.5". None. A signed, first edition of this autobiographical account by Paula Fox, daughter of American writers Paul Hervey and Elsie Fox. First edition, in the publisher's original paper-covered boards, with the original, unclipped dust wrapper. Signed by the author to fellow writer Stephen Vizinczey, 'To Gloria and Stephen, So looking forward to meeting you! Paula', dated 2001. This fascinating memoir by Paula Fox presents her atypical childhood, starting in a Manhattan orphanage, before being taken into the care of a Congregational minister in New York. Fox's parents soon resurfaced, sending her to a number of far-off places, including a sugarcane plantation in Cuba, owned by a distant relative. Due to her parents being the screenwriters Elsie and Paul Hervey Fox, Paula's childhood had her mixing with famous faces including Orson Welles, John Wayne and F. Scott Fitzgerald. From the library of Hungarian-Canadian author Stephen Vizinczey, best known for his 'In Praise of Older Women', and 'An Innocent Millionaire'. His writing was praised by the likes of Graham Greene and Anthony Burgess, describing his fiction as social epics which breathe hope in a corrupt world. In the publisher's original paper-covered boards, with the original, unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, lovely, with minor shelf wear and light bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Dust wrapper is excellent, with minor shelf wear and the odd mark. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Author's ink inscription to title page. Near Fine
