Miller, in the original, unclipped Gollancz dust wrapper. First UK and first hardcover edition. First published in paperback form in the US in 1962. With the original, unclipped Gollancz dust wrapper. This work is comprised of three science-fiction short novels, including the Hugo award winner 'The Darfsteller', in which "a computer-like machine that controls a theater of life-sized mannequins has displaced human actors.", John Clute in The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction. Winning the Hugo for best novelette in 1955, this collection marks the first appearance of this story. Also included are 'Dark Benediction' and 'Conditionally Human', the latter presenting genetic engineering being exploited in an authoritarian dystopia, creating "beings on the border between animal and human.", Lyman Tower Sargent in 'British and American Utopian Literature', 1516-1985, p. 244.With the ink inscription of H. W. Finnegan Jennings, the previous owner of Apollo Magazine, a monthly periodical surrounding the visual arts. Bound in the publisher's original cloth, with the original, unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, lovely, with light shelf wear and a little bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Ink inscription and stamp to front endpaper. Dust wrapper is excellent, with light edge wear and some sunning to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Near Fine
