New York: Harper and Company, 1871. Hardcover. Orig. brown cloth decorated and lettered in gilt. Near fine. 314 pages. 19 x 13 cm. Twenty four full page black and white illustrations. Eight pages of adverts at rear. Chaillu explored the regions of West Africa in the neighborhood of the equator, gaining considerable knowledge of the delta of the Ogooué River and the estuary of the Gabon, and the first modern European outsider to confirm the existence of gorillas, and later the Pygmy people of central Africa. Interior contents very fresh and bright as is the front cover gilt decoration. Spine faded, slight rubbing to backstrip extremities.
