About This Item

Chattanooga, TN, 1863. Near Fine. 1 handwritten letter (30 x 20 cm.) from Acting Assistant Adjutant General Alexander C. McClurg to Brigadier General Richard W. Johnson, dated Chattanooga, Sept. 22, 1863. McClurg relays the order from Brig. Gen. J. A. Garfield "to line the banks of Chattanooga Creek heavily with skirmishers" and protect the springs near the hospital building opposite the mills at the bridge. Alexander C. McClurg (d. 1901) on 15 Aug. 1862 had joined the Crosby Guards and was elected captain; the company was attached to the Second Board of Trade Regiment. In May 1863 he was placed on the staff of Major General McCook as Acting Assitant Adjutant General, in which capacity he served through the campaigns against Tullahoma and Chattanooga. After that he became Adjutant General of Baird's division and later lieutenant colonel and then Chief of Staff. Although McClurg was offered positions in the regular Army after the war, he returned to civilian life where he had a successful career as a publisher. After the war Brig. Gen. James A. Garfield (1831-1881) represented Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives before being elected President. In Near Fine Condition: light creasing; minor chipping along one edges; clean and solid.
