Description

London: John Murray, 1824. Hardback. Very Good. 6.5" by 4". None. A presentation copy of the fourth edition of Samuel Roger's poem on Italy. The volume contains the first part only. A presentation copy of the first part of Samuel Roger's longest poem. With an ink inscription to the title page that reads, 'From the author' in Roger's hand. Rogers first travelled to Italy around 1814 with his sister, and then visited Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley in Pisa seven years later. The first part was published anonymously in 1822 and the second part was published in 1828 with his name attached. Whilst the poem was a failure at first, Rogers later enlarged and revised the poem. Although Rogers was highly celebrated in his own life time, his fame has since been eclipsed by his friends William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Lord Byron. Social breakfasts were in vogue in London in the Victorian era, Roger's breakfasts often acted as an initiation into literary society. Rebound in a red hardback binding. Externally, generally smart. Rubbed to the boards, less so to the spine. The spine is missing a little of the hard wrap to the head, and the paper is torn a little at the front joint. The spine label is chipped so that the 'G' is missing in Rogers. A little bumped and worn at the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from some foxing to the endpaper, pages are bright and clean. Very Good
