Rare books from M&J Books

The first edition, first state, of one of Charles Dickens' most famous works. Evidence of state includes the misaligned i on page vii, chapter XXVII is on page 282 rather than 283, misspelled "coroboration" on page on page 387 (line 6), etc. All the illustrations are there and for the most part the images are in good condition, although a few are missing their glassine covers and most have extensive foxing around the edges. The narrative pages are in good - very good condition. The covers may have been reboun They are hard, beveled board with leather strips along sides adjacent to spine and triangular leather coverings at each of the corners. There is evidence of some rubbing in the upper left quadrant of the back cover - about 1.5 inches in diameter just below the the triangular leather corner cover. This is no. 25 of a limited edition of 1,470 signed copies, of which 95 were colored in Rockwell Kent's studio .Printed on all all rag French paper. The book is in excellent condition despite some serious wear along the spine )See photo). The pages are clear without any foxing, marks or tears. The gold impressions on the title remain sharp and the binding tight. Kent's signature and book number are on the last page (see photo)..

This has to be an extremely rare first edition of this important historical archive. We have not found another edition of this book prior to 1880. The pages are readable and the illustrations in good condition. There is moderate foxing on most of the pages and moderate yellowing on a few of the pages. There is what appears to be light to heavy water stains on many of the pages. There does not appear to be any missing pages or tears on any of the pages . Front page wrinkled engraving of Pres. Lincoln has separated from the binding as has the covers. The cloth over board covers are heavily worn. However, the gold leaf work on the spine and the title on the spine are still visible despite some tears and separation along the spine.. The remaining pages appear to be tightly bound. On the last textual page and the last fly-leaf page there is an upside down stamp of the Southern Book Exchange of Hagerstown, Md. He sailed to the Mediterranean, and was among the first citizens of the United States known to have visited Egypt. Shortly after arriving in Egypt he resigned his commission, converted to Islam and joined Muhammad Ali Pasha as the Topgi Bashi (chief of artillery) in an expedition up the Nile River against Sennar 1820, winning distinction as an officer of artillery. Some historians have noted that "there is a high probability that he became a secret agent" and that his service in Egypt was a part of that intelligence service. Stated "second printing" on publication page; presumed first edition but not so stated. Signed by author of first inside fly-leaf page. Book is in "as new" condition. Clipped dj (in a slipcase) is in excellent condition EXCEPT for a small tear at bottom and some shelf wear at top and bottom of spine. Published by the author after he was unable to find a publishing house to take it due to McCarthy era politics.

This is a complete, uniform, set of the 25 volume Author's National Edition. However, all the volumes are not first editions from the 1899 publication by Harper and Brothers. Thirteen of volumes are from the 1899 first edition publication. The remaining twelve volumes span the years 1901 - 1909. Condition of each book varies from Good to Very Good+. Pages on all the volumes are clear, without marks and overall without foxing (with only a few exceptions which have some light foxing). Book spines are all in good to excellent condition. We could not find any tears on pages except for a tear on the second page of volume xx (the page with the author's lithographed signature). All have a varied amount of shelf wear at the top and bottom of the spines. Otherwise shelf wear is very slight. Some have slight age toning. Thus it was a limited pre-publication copy; first printing. There is an "[ A ] " on the copyright page.The book is in excellent condition; 'like new" except for miniscule wear at cover edges. We believe this is a first edition, first printing as there are no indications of any previous editions or printings. Also, we found two other examples of this edition for sale as firsts.

The book is in excellent condition for its age. The soft leather-over board covers are in fair condition with much wear along edges, corners and spine. There is much age toning and light spotting on the fly-leaf pages, much less on the title pages and practically none on the succeeding pages. Seems to be a name in ink at the top of the first fly-leaf page Original binding is still tight.

Very rare first American edition, first printing of this seminal work, in excellent condition. Both volumes are in excellent condtion, almost like new. The volumes were printed in a "Special Kansas City Edition limited to 20,615 copiies" from the copyright page of volume 1. "11,500 copies") from volume 2 copyright page.. President Truman's full signature is on the first title page of volume 1. There is some miniscule wear at the cover corners and top of spine of volume 2. The unclipped djs ($5.00) have wear and tears - more on voulme 1 -some of which have been repaired.

S. Merwin with an afterword by Susan O'Conner. Six monoprints by Lou Hicks are included. This book is number 24 of the 30 copies printed.
This lyrical, religous themred book itself is a major work of art. It consists of 44 thick beveled pages. Printing is incised onto the pages. The book was printed and bound by Russell Maret. The type is a visual rendering of Garamond printed on Somerset paper. The monoprints were individually by Lou Hicks and printed in her studio.

The book contains 14 monoprints by Hicks. The narrative explores Chrisian themes centered around the ancient Stations of the Cross in the forrest in the Valley of the Moon, Montana
The book, itself, is a work of art. Besides the Hick's monoprints, its pages are of thick Somerset artist paper. Printed and bound by Russell Maret, one of America's most prominent printers. The type is incised into the pages. Each monotype takes up the entire pages they are printed upon.
