The first separate German edition (the first was published in 1582 as part of a larger guide to hunting) of Du Fouilloux's classic Renaissance guide to hunting with dogs originally published in 1566 as La Venerie. Later rebinding in an illuminated vellum antiphonal leaf laid into what appears to be the original boards (with some repairs to the corners and with new pastedowns), new endpapers added, blanks not present. Large repair to the title with loss of a bit of text including the date (added in manuscript). A bit of worming in the right margin not touching any text, occasional foxing and a persistent but generally mild dampstain in the gutter of much of the volume. Early full stamped pigskin with one clasp missing, a bit of wear at the corners, some discoloration and staining - very sound overall. With the title in red excised and pasted back onto a blank, a few library stamps (NY Bar Association Library), minor worming mostly at the end, printers mark excised from the final index leaf and repaired on the verso, old paper repairs to the margins of the final leaves, obscuring the leaf number on the final leaf, a few stains here and there, but generally clean and a bright, crisp copy overall. Printed in red and black, 270 numbered leaves, 2 binder's blanks at front, 3 at the rear. Printed 1497/8, 15 1/2 x 10 1/3 inches, from 70-82 lines. Early (ca. early 17th c.) full red calf elaborately gilt, modest wear at hinges, a few surface marks and scuffs but a lovely binding. 4 old bookplates on endpapers (Syston Park, Howard Pease, John William Pease) old pencil note on endpaper. 1 leaf with long vertical cut in the outer margin, 1 leaf with mended tear. Last leaf cut in lower part and filled out with paper. Some foxing, spotting, and discoloration, mostly to the few few and last few leaves, generally quite clean. Milan: Antonius Zarotus, 1487. Second Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. 19th century red morocco, gilt, hinges and spine rubbed and a little weak, but still generally sound and attractive. Added marbled endpapers and a description of the edition and a note on the binding penned on added blank endpapers. The second edition of Tacitus, much improved by Puteolanus from the first, with the editio princeps of The Life of Agricola. Once thought to have been printed in the 1470s, but now usually pegged as 1487. Likely washed, though gently, except for the first and final leaves (Agricola, leaves 176-187, with a dampstain in the margin, final two leaves darkened). Four small wormtrails in last section (leavs 121-end), two trails in the textblock but generally very unobtrusive. Three volumes bound as five in a very idiosyncratic manner. the 33 plays (7 of Aeschylus from the 1557 edition, 7 by Sophocles from the 1603 and 19 by Euripides from 1602) are broken up and bound in volumes 2-5 with interleaved blanks. There is no obvious order to the plays, with the three authors intermingled in each volume. The first volume is the title pages, prefatory material and notes. All three books collate as complete, early notes and underlining through all the volumes and additions in manuscript in a few spots where the plays broke up inconveniently, modest foxing, generally quite clean.
