Broadsides

Broadsides are large pieces of paper with text printed only on the front side, and they have historically had many different uses. Broadsides became particularly popular during the American Revolution, as they were used to quickly notify citizens and soldiers of changing events. Of course, broadsides are not only used for wartime proclamations. They have often used as community or government issued notices, as well as ways to advertise various entertainment events, particularly plays and operas. Another popular use for broadsides has been the printing of poetry, often accompanied by illustrations and the signature of the poet, and these items make great gifts and wonderful works of art.

Description:
New York: McIntosh Publishing Co, 1895. Unbound. Very Good. Broadside or poster advertising the 1895 book. 12½" x 18". Illustrated by F. Richard Anderson. Printed in black with a whimsical football illustration on pale green paper. Very good with small chips at the extremities affecting no printing, and a small piece of tape on the reverse (to no purpose). The illustration depicts a man in a fleur-de-lys uniform with a leather nose guard, opposed in the distance by some rather goofy looking football players (some with "Y," "H," "C," and "P" – presumably for Yale, Harvard, Columbia, and Princeton or Penn). Anderson was a successful Broadway costume designer, which probably explains the *très sportif* uniform. A poster advertising a very early football book, following Walter Camp's *American Football* (considered the first book on the sport) by four years. Rare. *OCLC* locates one copy of the 36-page book at the University Club in New York City, and no copies of this poster.

Description:
Prov. R. I. [ Providence, Rhode Island ]: Henry L. Tillinghast, 1855. First Edition. Near Fine. First Edition. Broadside. Single leaf, printed on recto only. 9 x 6 1/4 inches. Wove paper with no watermarks. Cleanly trimmed (with minor variation on upper edge). A nice impression noting some ink ghosting (presumably from other copies printed at the same time). Signed in type "J. A. Foster" at base of leaf. Intended for brief use in a town or village, these broadsides had a low survival rate. The photographer would pin them up or circulate in the village they were in, drumming up whatever business they could with this new wonder. Once they left, there was no use for the advertisement anymore. Traveling photographers left fewer traces of their businesses - even semi-permanent establishments could put advertisements on their photographs, in local papers, etc. The itinerant photographer was just that - moving around constantly. It is a wonder any record survived - and most we find were those presumably… Read more

Description:
[Edo, 1860. Two woodblock-printed Kawaraban broadsides on Japanese paper, each 9 x 11 5/8 inches. Two late Edo Kawaraban broadsides recording foreign people, objects, coinage, dress, and material culture at the moment of Japan's accelerated contact with Europe and America. These two Kawaraban belong to the popular printed culture that developed around Japan's encounter with foreign powers in the 1850s and early 1860s. Produced for circulation beyond official channels, such broadsides translated diplomatic and commercial contact into a form legible to a broad Japanese readership, combining image, caption, anecdote, and report. Their interest lies in the way they classify the foreign world through visible particulars: clothing, physiognomy, tools, coins, flags, animals, weapons, and curiosities. The first broadside is arranged in four compartments under a title describing Western products and curiosities. It includes figures identified as foreign visitors or crewmen, among them an English captain and… Read more

San Francisco, CA: Published by Henry Payot, 184, Washington Street, 1867. broadside. oblong folio. broadside. wood engraving 5-5/16 x 19-1/4, printed across a double sheet measuring 7-7/8 x 21-3/16, blue wove paper. Panoramic view looking east down Sacramento Street from Nob Hill, with several Chinese at left; Telegraph Hill at left in distance. Probably made from a photograph; several misunderstandings as a result. (This was used for Baird 317; one copy of Baird 235 at California Historical Society has date of January 12, 1867, suggesting that the 1860 date on Baird 317 may not be actual date of publication.) See also Baird 236. Some staining throughout, but mostly to the edges. Overall a lovely copy of an incredibly rare piece. Copy at UC Berkeley.

Description:
Etched playing board with rules of the game in lower margin of the sheet and publisher's number 221. Sheet-size 407 x 335 mm. Very rare and beautifully illustrated etched sheet for dice game; the centre field of the playing board depicts an outdoor scene with a dressage show of monkeys in various costumes with spectators behind wooden bars, in the corners more or less anthropomorphic images of four species of monkeys. 14 of the 30 fields showing monkeys in various costumes doing acrobatic stunts, and if you enter one of these fields you have to according to the rules restart from the beginning or pay a penalty. - Georg Nikolaus Renner (1803-1854) was an art dealer and publisher in Nuremberg since 1826. From 1837 Friedrich Schuster became his partner, from then on the company was called "Renner & Co" – therefore the present game must have been published before. An almost perfect copy of a finely illustrated example of a monkey theatre dice game, a subject which became very popular in the 19th century.

Impressively large and very rare French broadside table providing a detailed overview of the statistics on population, geography and economy of the 57 départemens of France for the year 1824. It does so in an extremely structured manner. Of each administrative region the precise geographic and topographic values are given, after which the specialization in natural or industrial productivity of these regions is described. For example, the département Calvados has "excellent horses, bestieux fat, grains, cider, cider brandy, flax, hemp" etc. etc. According to a contemporary review in Revue encyclopédique (1825), this table was considered especially useful to understand the importance of each of the départements, and… Read more

Description:
1853. Broadside poster printed in black ink on cream-colored wove paper, 6 x 12 7/8 inches (151 x 321 mm), the full sheet. Overall toning, scattered foxing and damp stain. Corner losses, none of which effects the image area. Newspaper articles published throughout the winter of 1856 and the into the summer of 1857 which appear in local publications including the Galveston Star, The Central Texian, and The Weekly Telegraph, tell an almost cinematic story of murder and escape set against the backdrop of a country on the precipice of civil war. Skirmishes already taking place in Kansas and across the south, and notices of "radical abolishionist" activity in New York, the Presidential canvas had begun; the Know Nothing candidate Millard Fillmore, who was the last Whig candidate in American history, and Democrat James Buchanan were preparing to square off in the Nation's highest civic contest. While most local news still consisted of mundane issues like steamship arrivals, land disputes, and cattle theft,… Read more

Description:
Besnard: L'Aigle (Orne), Normandy, France. Printer: Paris: H. Besnard. Printer: Imp. Petitjean, 1930. A jockey riding a brandy bottle through the sky -- what could be more whimsical? This scarce poster has a visual charisma borne of its simplicity, its bright coloration. It promotes its product with virtually no words. N.d., circa 1930. The poster measures 120 by 80 cm, not including the canvas margin. Rare -- we couldn't find other copies of this delightful poster. Backed by linen, which stabilizes and protects the poster and allows for easier handling. We haven't been able to find out anything about the company, suggesting it was a smaller concern, long gone. The graphics of the poster, though, should have an eternal appeal.

[Nashville, 1861. Good plus.. Small broadside, approximately 11 x 7.25 inches. Creased along lower edge; ink burn causing a dime-size paper loss at upper right, slightly affecting border, plus a few additional stray ink marks. Later, faint pencil annotations on blank verso. Moderate tanning and dust soiling. A scarce Confederate carrier's address, published on Christmas in Nashville during the first year of the Civil War. The Republican Banner was formed in 1837 from a merger of two other periodicals, and was the first permanent daily newspaper to serve the Nashville area, as well as the first to operate its presses by steam. Tennessee officially seceded from the Union on June 8, 1681, but Nashville surrendered to Gen. Grant's troops on February 23, 1862, whereupon the Republican Banner suspended publication for the remainder of the war. As a result, the present broadside is only carrier's address issued by the paper that is also a Confederate imprint. The text is printed in two columns with in a… Read more
