Bound in tooled full leather, covers with center panel bordered by intricate, Middle-Eastern gilt cross design; paneled spine with gilt designs and raised bands. Some foxing to endpapers, but text pages are clean and bright, old, amusing bookplate of "ne obliviscaris", beneath a wing-eared boar head, on pastedown, covers scuffed along the edges with a few chips, outer front hinge cracked, but cover remains tight. Library stamp on main title accompanied by a second perforated library stamp near the printer's device. The outer edges to the first few prelims are slightly worn. Pages are generally clean with occasional mild marginal spotting. A small piece is missing from bottom margin of the final leaf. Page 492 is a bit soiled. Bound in brown library buckram; title and shelf number in gilt on the spine; pocket on inside front cover. Hermann Witsius (1636-1708) was a Dutch theologian and a professor of divinity at Franeker (1675), Utrecht (1680), and Leiden (1698). [EB11]. His Aegyptiaca (first printed in 1683) compares the religious rites of the Jews and the Egyptians. Handsomely bound in the original red pebble-grained cloth (imitation leather), with blind-stamped rectangular borders and gilt titles on the front cover and spine. On the cover are gold-stamped images of the sphinx (sphynx) and a pyramid. All gilt stamping is still bright and shiny. Original yellow (silk?) endpapers are a bit speckled but all other pages are creamy white, clean and unmarked with NO foxing. NO owner's name or bookplate. No date of publication (but copyright 1898). Hinges are perfect. Oblong Hardcover. 11" wide by 8" tall. All edges gilt. This souvenir photo-album has 109 leaves, mostly printed on the rectos only (i.e. versos are usually blank). Most of the photos are full-page. Interior is tight, bright, and crisp with no ownership marks. Binding shows bumping of upper spine and some wear to edges. DJ is clipped with a sticker mark on the front and small tears, abrasion, and age-toning (although overall intact). Photo is of the copy we have here at Barbed Wire Books.

Brown leather with gilt detailing and labels to spine. Four raised bands, silk ribbon, and moire endpapers. All edges gilt. Previous owner's stamp to title page and last page. Minor staining to boards and wear to gilt on edges, but overall a clean copy. Scarce.

Very good copy of the third edition of Baedeker's Handbook for Travellers. This is the last edition of this handbook for Lower Egypt. 14 maps, 33 plans, 7 views and 76 vignettes. Book is very good. Soft leather boards clean. Binding tight. Edges marbled. Light cracking of hinge inside front cover but still very firm (see images).Cover has very small wear at corners and head and tail of spine.Only marking or inscription is name and address of previous owner in pencil on first blank with previous sale price and edition also in pencil. Tiny bookseller label on front pastedown.
Overall, a well preserved copy of an uncommon title.
