On offer is a super, original manuscript relic of British brewing history and education being an 1892 journal of lectures on beer brewing handwritten by an unidentified author wherein 21 lectures numbered 25 to 46 covering 110 pages or so various methods of fermentation, scientific theories, factors affecting the fermentation process plus detailed instruction for popular commercial brewing methods in the United Kingdom including a twenty-seven page section in a water-based process known as Burtonisation. Of particular relevance and significance to brewers and those researchers and historians of beer making will be the knowledge that this book is placed directly in the midst of the late 19th Century controversies within the scientific community regarding fermentation: The first lecture presented goes immediately to the heart of the matter: the intercellular theory of Louis Pasteur. Presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper by Judy Garland, "To George - Sincerely Judy Garland"; on the verso of the front free endpaper by Irving Berlin, "To Mr. George Rose, Who should remember that the morning after the night before is sometimes very sour.  Berlin"; and on the half-title page by Bob Considine, "For George good guy! Bob Considine." The recipient, George Rose was a regular patron of the Ritz Bar which gained a reputation over the years for its glamorous cocktail parties and the unique bartending skills of Frank Meier, a head barman from 1921 until his death in 1947. A beautiful copy of one of the best books on single malt First edition of one of the earliest paeans to single malt whisky and one of the principal publications on the subject. It was written at a time when the coincidence of the First World War, the Great Depression, and prohibition had left whiskey sales on the rocks. A crusading journalist, nationalist, literary publisher, novelist, and playwright, Thomson founded the Porpoise Press in 1922, which was at the heart of the early twentieth-century Scottish literary renaissance. For this title he adopted the pseudonym Aeneas MacDonald from one of Bonnie Prince Charlie's Seven Men of Moideart. Small octavo. Original blue cloth, title label on spine. With dust jacket.
