Patricia Highsmith (1921 – 1995)

Her parents, Jay Bernard Plangman and Mary Coates, separated before her birth, and Patricia was raised by her grandmother and later by her mother and stepfather in New York City. Growing up in an affluent but troubled household, she developed a fascination with writing from a young age, often retreating into books as an escape.

Highsmith attended Barnard College in New York City, where she studied English literature and graduated in 1942. During her college years, she immersed herself in writing short stories and became involved in various literary circles. Her early literary influences included Dostoevsky, Graham Greene, and Emily Dickinson, shaping her dark and introspective writing style.

Highsmith's breakthrough came with her debut novel, Strangers on a Train (1950), which was later adapted into a successful film by Alfred Hitchcock. This novel introduced her trademark themes of psychological suspense, moral ambiguity, and the exploration of the darker aspects of human nature. Her subsequent novels, including The Talented Mr. Ripley (1955) and its sequels, further solidified her reputation as a master of psychological thrillers.

In 1952 she published The Price of Salt under the pseudonym 'Claire Morgan.' The novel was ground-breaking as the first lesbian novel with a happy ending. In 1990 it was republished as Carol under Highsmith's name, and later made into a movie.

Throughout her career, Highsmith garnered acclaim for her complex characters and intricate plots, often delving into the complexities of identity, guilt, and obsession. Despite being known primarily for her suspense novels, she also wrote short stories, nonfiction, and even ventured into children's literature.
