About This Item

New York: The Century Co, 1900. Hardcover. Illustrations by Allegra Eggleston. Small 8vo. Dark green cloth with gilt lettering and light green decoration. 362pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Very good. Faint binding wear, else internally fine. Tight, handsome later printing with bright giltstamping of this historical novel -- with choice autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf is a 3½" X 2¼" slip on which the author boldly pens in his attractive script "Autograph of / Edwd. Eggleston / 1878." When first published in 1887, the title read "The Graysons: A Story of Illinois." Eggleston (1837-1902) was one of Indiana's greatest writers, publishing many novels, juvenile tales and histories in the latter 19th century. Bookplate on front pastedown of Byron Nathan McKinstry (1872-1944), businessman of Kankakee, Illinois whose namesake father's "The California Gold Rush Overland Diary of Byron N. McKinstry 1850 1852" was published in 1975 in Arthur Clark's "American trails series." MONAGHAN 1030 note.
