With the armorial bookplate of David Kennedy. "this edition which is very beautifully printed, and of which there are some sumptuous copies on large paper, is deserving of a place in the student's library, from its extreme correctness" (Dibdin). An excellent copy and quite uncommon in contemporary vellum. ESTC T136732.

Original Publisher's dark brown cloth and gilt lettered spine. Volumes 3 rear hinge is slightly cracked, otherwise a beautiful set in fresh condition. Housed in a cloth clamshell case with a morocco label. First Edition of Proudhon's Most Massive and Powerful Work - Completing and Fully Explicating His "Philosophy of the Revolution" - Seized and Suppressed by the Government Just Six Days After Publication Just six days after publication on April 22, 1858, remaining copies of the book were confiscated on the grounds that it was "an attack upon public and religious morals." Proudhon was indicted, convicted and sentenced to three years, one month and fifteen days in jail and assessed a 4,000 franc fine. He fled to Brussels to avoid incarceration and remained there for most of what was left of his life. An important work which has become difficult to find in the Publisher's cloth.

Very good in contemporary brown leather with slight wear to extremities. Book plate of Charles Smith on the front pastedown, otherwise clean and tight. An excellent copy.

All joints and hinges slightly worn and/or cracked but covers holding well by strings. Some brown stains to edges of endpapers and first and last few leaves. The spine is darkened but a nice uncomplicated copy overall with a refreshed label.

He was an American film director and television producer, director of the Geffen Playhouse, Also was a Member of Cates/Doty Productions and founding dean of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. He produced the Academy Awards a record 14 times from 1990-2008 and he also directed Gish on stage and on the small screen in Hobson s Choice.

This copy is from the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM] library, with their rubber stamp on the front endpaper at the bottom center that reads "FILE COPY," and another stamp above it which reads "Metro-Goldwyn Mayer Library, Culver City. There s a tiny date stamp of "Jan 4 71 at the top left of the endpaper. Kept on file by MGM for use in the making of the popular and influential 1971 film starring Richard Roundtree. The film was followed by several sequels, a television series, and a 2000 movie starring Samuel Jackson who plays the nephew of Richard Roundtree s Shaft. A Fine copy in a near-fine unclipped ($4.95) dust jacket.

Text generally fresh with light scattered foxing, gilt on spine surprisingly brighter than expected, cloth with rubbing and wear along the hinges, but fully intact. Uncommon, especially so in publisher s cloth. First edition of Timothy Mather Cooley's important biography of Reverend Lemuel Haynes, who fought in the American Revolution as a Minuteman, penned one of the earliest attacks on slavery by an African American and is considered the "first black person to lead a white church. Born to an African father and white mother, Haynes was abandoned in infancy and raised as an indentured servant to a white family. 8vo, pp xiii, [3], 192, uncut in original blue boards, neatly respined in paper with window cut original label, minor foxing at end, a little worn at corners, but a sound very good copy, FIRST EDITION; John Haslam was medical officer at the Rethlem Hospital in London, and, based on earlier work, in 1809 published his highly influential work 'Observations on Madness and Melancholy.' A father figure in modern psychiatric practice. Haslam was known for his work on mental illness. Haslam's case study of James Tilly Matthews is the earliest detailed description of paranoid schizophrenia.
