The six volumes include verbal and pictorial portraits of each of the 425 men who were appointed by Confederate President Jefferson Davis to be generals in the Confederate army. Each portrait includes between 1,000 and 1,500 words and all of the known photographs in uniform that were known to exist. The essays were written more than twenty prominent Civil War historians. London: J. Johnson, 1790. Volume I: folding map, xvi, 283 pages; volume 2: viii, 408 pages. De Lesseps accompanied La Perouse on the first part of his attempted circumnavigation of the globe. After investigation of the west coast of North America, La Perouse sent de Lesseps overland to take the journals and maps of the expedition to Paris. La Perouse and his ships subsequently were lost after they left Australia, and the journals carried by de Lesseps assumed great historical significance when published. Even more scarce than those records today are de Lesseps' report of his own overland travels through the Kamtschatka peninsula. The report also includes 25 pages of vocabulary translating common English words into Russian, Kamtschadale, Koriac, Tchouktchi, and Lamont languages. Internally clean with only minor foxing, the two volumes in 3/4 leather over marbled paper covered boards have recently been sympathetically rebacked (original title and volume patches retained). For her literary work Mrs. Dennis received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Middlebury College, and was made a Knight Commander of the Order of Alfonso X the Wise by the Spanish Government. The highest literary decoration in Spain." The book is signed by Dennis and inscribed by her to "Mr. and Mrs. Campbell, who love Spain too." New York: The Legal Classics Library / Gryphon Editions, 1994. xvi, 431 pages.  8vo.  A facsimile reprint of the scarce 1894 second edition.  Beautifully bound in gilt-decorated blue leather; all edges gilt; marbled endpapers.  Legal scholar and Federal judge John Forrest Dillon is most remembered for "Dillon's Rule," the legal principle that local governments are creation of states and have only those powers allowed by the state governments.  Dillon first espoused the rule in an 1868 case and elaborated on it in the book MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS in 1872.  In 1907 the U. S. Supreme Court explicitly adopted "Dillon's Rule."  The book offered here was Dillon's final book, written while he was the Storrs Pofessor of Law at Yale University.  The book is in as-new condition.. Napoli, Italy: Negenborn & Bokwinkel, 1890. Bound in red linen covered flexible boards. There are 8 pages, each with an original color lithograph. Italian painter Geramia Discanno (1839-1907) spent years reproducing the frescoes of ancient Pompeii. The eight color lithographs in this book beautifully represent a portion of that effort. The book is in about very good condition: externally bright, with some soiling of the red cloth; internally, clean and bright lithographs with some toning of paper limited to the white margins.. Hollywood, California: Walt Disney Productions, 1936. Each of the promotional prints is 10 inches by 8 inches. Probably created using the pochoir process-- the white areas on Donald and on the bicycle tires are flocked to provide texture. In his debut cartoon in 1934, Donald was portrayed with an elongated bill. During the summer of 1936, Disney began to portray Donald with the somewhat shorter bill that is familiar today and as it is in the 2 pochoirs. In 1939 Donald's hat was changed from the predominately white one in these pochoirs to the blue one familiar today. The prints are in excellent condition: clean and bright; free of creasing and tears. The versos are toned.. First Edition. Single Sheet. Near Fine.
