Macon, Georgia: The J. W. Burke Company, 1928. 52 pages. 12mo (7" X 5 1/4"). Staple-bound pamphlet in red pictorial wraps. First edition. Collection of 3 short stories originally written for publication in magazines in Century Magazine. Evelyn Magruder De Jarnette (1841-1902) was the wife of a slaveholder who lived on at "Pine Forest," a plantation in Spotsylvania, Virginia. The stories in this collection as well as others that were published in the Atlantic Monthly and Frank Leslie's various magazines reflect the typical mythological view of Virginians at the time. In 1929 Mrs. De Jarnette's daughter described that viewpoint: "The hardship s after a cruel war and the faithfulness of the family servants served as a background for Mrs. DeJarnette's writings. She makes us live again, through the tender care of her black mammies, the feeling of deep understanding and devotion that existed between the white people of Virginia and their former slaves, and there… Read More

Description:
London: J. Johnson, 1790. Volume I: folding map, xvi, 283 pages; volume 2: viii, 408 pages. De Lesseps accompanied La Perouse on the first part of his attempted circumnavigation of the globe. After investigation of the west coast of North America, La Perouse sent de Lesseps overland to take the journals and maps of the expedition to Paris. La Perouse and his ships subsequently were lost after they left Australia, and the journals carried by de Lesseps assumed great historical significance when published. Even more scarce than those records today are de Lesseps' report of his own overland travels through the Kamtschatka peninsula. The report also includes 25 pages of vocabulary translating common English words into Russian, Kamtschadale, Koriac, Tchouktchi, and Lamont languages. Internally clean with only minor foxing, the two volumes in 3/4 leather over marbled paper covered boards have recently been sympathetically rebacked (original title and volume patches retained). Very attractive… Read More

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Leary & Getz, 1853. [The title continues:] WITH FULL INSTRUCTIONS HOW TO PERFORM THE VARIOUS TRICKS, ON CARDS, DICE, BIRDS, RINGS &c. Engraved frontispiece, 71 pages of text, and a 64 page catalogue of "historical, theological, juvenile, and miscellaneous" books published by Leary & Getz. 16mo. First Philadelphia edition, preceded in the United States only by editions published in New York and Boston. Like all early editions, this one is rare--WorldCat locates only 3 copies in libraries worldwide. First published in 1722, the book drew extensively on Reginald Scot's The Discoverie of Witchcraft (1584) and William Vincent's Hocus Pocus Jr. The Anatomie of Legerdemain (1634) for its description of magic tricks, many of which are performed by magicians today. The book's popularity among magicians was so strong that there were numerous editions published in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, but paradoxically demand was so… Read More

Description:
Hollywood, California: Walt Disney Productions, 1936. Each of the promotional prints is 10 inches by 8 inches. Probably created using the pochoir process-- the white areas on Donald and on the bicycle tires are flocked to provide texture. In his debut cartoon in 1934, Donald was portrayed with an elongated bill. During the summer of 1936, Disney began to portray Donald with the somewhat shorter bill that is familiar today and as it is in the 2 pochoirs. In 1939 Donald's hat was changed from the predominately white one in these pochoirs to the blue one familiar today. The prints are in excellent condition: clean and bright; free of creasing and tears. The versos are toned.. First Edition. Single Sheet. Near Fine.
