Number 289 of an unspecified subscriber's edition, this copy inscribed to a Pacific Northwest ship captain and signed by Gordon Newell. A Superior Publishing invoice written out to that captain is laid in, as is his business card. A logical, recent extension of E. W. Wright's Lewis and Dryden's Marine History of the Pacific Northwest (1895), which covered the subject to date.

Broadside illustrated with Akio Saito pen-and-ink reproduction with his chop in red. With slight crimping at top edge. Corners sharp, Signed by Shiffert in full, along with her name in Japanese characters. Of an edition limited to 50 copies, this is hand-numbered copy 3. Shiffert's poetry is marked by her abiding affinity with nature and spartan imagery. She studied under Roethke at the University of Washington, and was then drawn, increasingly, to Japan and Japanese poetry. In 1963 she moved to Kyoto. Her poetry was published widely, along with her translations of Japanese poetry and a groundbreaking study of Buson. A rubber stamp on the front cover provides the address of a Seattle travel agency ("Western Int'l Travel Service," "Travel with WITS"). The Maple Grove Resort on the Olympic Peninsula's Lake Sutherland was founded as early as 1910, and appears to be thriving when this 1950s-era tourist brochure was published. The advertising copy lauds the built environment of the resort and the splendor of its natural setting.
