First printing in this format of essays on the Club by Powell, Jake Zeitlin, Ward Ritchie and Tyrus G. Harmsen, the latter two revised from earlier publications. Description:
Paisley: Printed by G. Caldwell, 1827.. 8pp. Small cheaply printed chapbook (16 x 10 cm), untrimmed and partially unopened, extracted from nonce pamphlet volume. A bit ragged at edges, edges dust-tanned, but otherwise near very good. One of several later printings of these poems by the poet / ornithologist, first published in 1796, where it is noted "As delivered in the Pantheon, Edinburgh. (Recited in the character of a poor peddler) by the author of Watty and Meg." Wilson had departed for Philadelphia in 1794 and although he didn't abandon his poetic muse, his fame was established with AMERICAN ORNITHOLOGY; OR, THE NATURAL HISTORY OF THE BIRDS OF THE UNITED STATES. Accompanied by a disbound copy of the PAISLEY REPOSITORY (VIII), ca. 1810, printing a "List of Pieces written by Mr. Alexande Wilson, now in Philadelphia, which is accompanied by his description, partially in verse, of "The American Blue Bird."

Contemporary calf, raised bands, spines gilt extra, gilt labels. Some occasional tanning and foxing, spine extremities a bit chipped and cracked, otherwise good and sound. Second Edinburgh collected edition of the first four volumes, and the original Edinburgh editions of volumes five through eight. With the bookplates in each volume of Thomas Philip de Grey, Wrest Park, and Robert William Rogers. THE RAMBLER was Johnson's first paper and commenced publication on 20 March 1749/50 and concluded with issue 208 on 14 March 1752; the appearance of the early volumes of several of the various collected editions occurred while publication of the paper was ongoing. One of a total edition of 200 numbered copies, printed in various colors on blue-grey Shadwell paper by Hamady. The posthumously collected works of the fictional poet of Red Creek, Texas, and lead guitarist of Chicken Gumbo, who disappeared while on a hunting trip in the mountains. This is number 56 and is one of the copies with the colon on the title-page printed in white. It was also one of the author's copies, with his faint circular blindstamp in the upper fore-corner of the first blank after the free endsheet. HAMADY 36.

An excellent association copy, inscribed by Liebling on the verso of the front free endsheet to fellow NEW YORKER staff writer Berton Roueché and family: "For the Rouechés, Joe Liebling 4/25/47." The recipient, Chicago native Berton Roueché (1910-1994), joined THE NEW YORKER in 1944, after a decade of work for midwestern papers. He specialized in medical topics, particularly epidemiology, and published over twenty books, some on allied topics, others suspense fiction.
