The Corriere dei Piccoli, founded in 1908 by Silvio Spaventa Filippi, is considered the first comic published in Italy. Among the characters appearing in these issues are Salomone e Dorotea by Attilio Mussino, il Signor Bonaventura by Sergio Tofano, Bice e Bauci by Mario Pompei and some of the most important American strips of the era including Jiggs and Maggie (Arcibaldo e Petronilla) by George McManus, The Captain and the Kids (Bibì e Bibò) by Rudolph Dirks, Felix the Cat (Mio Mao) by Pat Sullivan. In 1989-90 the Roman newspaper Il Messaggero published a weekly insert featuring classic Mickey Mouse stories from the 1930s to the 1950s. The set includes more than 90 stories by Gottfredson with more than 1,500 pages in color and b&w. The condition of the set is fine. Oblong Octavo (8 1/8 x 5 3/4 inches; 208 x 145 mm), 75, [5] pages, in wrappers (soft cover).A rare book of cartoons published by the Czech Communist Party newspaper, Rudé právo. Antonin Pelc and Lev Haas drew the cartoons, which are pro-Communist, anti-Nazi, anti-American, and anti-Western alliance. Holobrádek (a pseudonym) supplied short verses to accompany each cartoon. The book appeared in 1947, a year before the Communist seizure of power in Czechoslovakia. Oddly, the cover features a cartoon by Pelc that misspells the name of Klement Gottwald, the Communist leader (it shows only one "t" in Gottwald). A sign displayed in the cartoon reads (translating from the Czech): "The construction of a two-year plan is carried out by Gotwald and others." Stan Mott (1933–2022) was one of the best-known and most-beloved car cartoonists, with work appearing in Road and Track, Automobile, and other magazines. He is best remembered for his silly cars, including the Cyclops II, described as "the world's cheapest ($14.32) and stupidest (fetal seating positions) car." Many car enthusiasts built versions of the car and Road and Track featured their custom built Cyclops in dozens of magazine articles. This mixed-media cartoon, in pen and ink, watercolor, and gouache, is a fever dream of the Cyclops II, which begins the wordless narrative parked outside a house.
