The ultimate encyclopedic reference for the historian (or any other scholar who wishes to discover the \"state of knowledge\" in his or her specialty before 1910). When we found that precious edition at a yard sale in Minnesota (more than 40 years ago, when we were a lowly graduate student), we almost wet our pants. Of course we bought it, even though it cost us nearly two months\' rent, and we\'ve been hauling it around with us ever since. 1699 FAMOUS Louis Moreri Historical Dictionary RARE Encyclopedia HUGE 4v SET
Originally published in 1674, Louis Moreri's "Grand Dictionaire Historique" was an encyclopedia focused on historical and biographical articles. The original French and English edition were critical in giving rise to more other dictionaries, such as Pierre Bayle's "Critical Dictionary". While this work was highly influential during its time, it was eventually replaced as the preeminent reference work when Diderot's 'Encyclopedia' was printed.
This 1699 massive four-volume edition was published in Paris by Denys Mariette.

Two volumes of text with plates in the third. 4to. lxxvi, 728: [4], 979: Complete with 108 plates, numbered from 1 to 118 with 10 folding plates receiving a number for each side. Publication dates 1787, 1789, 1790 respectively. Good. Spines chipped and cracked although hinges still sound. Some dealer prices inked to front endpapers. Hardcover. Good.

1698 Louis Moreri Historical Dictionary RARE Encyclopedia French 4v HUGE FOLIOS

Originally published in 1674, Louis Moreri's "Grand Dictionaire Historique" was an encyclopedia focused on historical and biographical articles. The original French and this English edition were critical in giving rise to more important dictionaries, such as Pierre Bayle's "Critical Dictionary."

While this work was highly influential during its time, it was eventually replaced as the preeminent reference work when Diderot's 'Encyclopedia' was printed, but not before going through nearly 20 editions. This 1698 French edition is one of the earliest of this landmark encyclopedia and is notable for being an enormous, four-volume set! Absolutely huge!

26 volumes (Complete 6th Edition in 20 volumes with the Supplementary edition in 6 volumes), 11 inches tall. A soft light brown leather and board with corner pieces with raised bands and very fine gilt lettering. There is some foxing and browning of leaves and pages, raised library embossing on first pages. Some sloughing of binding and blotching. The 6th edition is difficult to find and this is an impressive well cared for set.

Jacques Peuchet's "Universal Dictionary of Geography" was one of the most important late 18th-century economic encyclopedias. It was based on the notes of a Andre Morellet's unpublished treatise on economics. This dictionary is an extensive, detailed compendium of economic terms with countless examples and descriptions. Condition: Binding considerably rubbed and chipped, with losses to boards and spine. The hinges and binding are tight. Contents browned and with water stains and wormholes in places.

Explanatory text in German and French.The Picture-Book was published in 12 volumes from 1790 to 1843 and eventually included 1,185 handcoloured copperplates. Bertuch wished to reproduce the magic of discovery, and mixed engravings of plants, animals, shells, minerals, volcanoes and technical inventions in a utopian chaos, so that a child could encounter afresh the wonders of the natural world at the turn of every page. Although unsigned, the copperplates were overseen by Georg Melchior Kraus and J.H. Lips, after drawings by Th. Götz, C. Graf, C. Horny, Fr. Kaiser, and W.
