Text in Tatar; Russian title from colophon: Tatarskiye narodnyye poslovitsy. The classic collection of Tatar proverbs, more than 38,000, compiled by an acclaimed writer of songs and plays. A new edition was issued in 2010. Scarce in the West, with just one US holding (Harvard, OCLC 83619595) and two incomplete sets in Germany. First edition (first printing). Very good to near fine volumes; no dust jackets, perhaps as issued. Bookplate in each volume.

T. Nelson and sons. London. 1853. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (7 x 4.6 inches). Frontis, vignette on extra title page and four full page engraved plates, each with a tissue guard. Aside from a couple of small water marks to the frontis and title pages this is a bright copy in original publishers red cloth with elaborate blind stanped decoration to both boards and spine. Gilt lettering to the centre of the front board and the spine. Yellow coated endpapers. A hint of fading to the spine and mild mottling to the front board but overall a lovely copy.

This is a small book of poetry by Madame de Basily in English. Her story can be read on the Hoover Institution website. She is American born and the donor of the items in the Nicolas de Basily room. This book was published in Paris the year after her marriage in November, 1919. Her husband was the Diplomat of Imperial Russia 1903 - 1917. The poetry in this 31 page book is dated 1915 - 1917. It appears to be one of a kind. There are marbled end papers plus three from, front and back. The cover has wear as shown. There is foxing from page 21 onward. The poems are titled: In Tifles, The Cry of Holy Russia, Anarchist Lullaby, Human Wreckage, Afternoon Service in the Alexander Newsky Monastery, The Kremlin, White Night on the Gulf of Finland,Republic of Cronstadt, ProphesyTo Life. There is also a dedication to her mother. Mr. and Mrs. de Basily are buried in Baltimore. Land, Estates, and Wealth were never recovered in Russia.

Robert Ker Porter was a Scottish diplomat who in the early 19th-century was appointed royal historical painter to Alexander I of Russia. He became close friends with the Tsar and married his daughter the princess, which kept his home in Russia for most of the first half of the 1800s. Because he was well acquainted with Russian military men, he published an important account of the events in 1812, particularly the French invasion of Russia.
This 1815 edition of Porter's 'Narrative of the Campaign in Russia in the Year 1812' includes a folding map of the French Army and their pursuit of Moscow.
