About This Item

New York: Privately Printed, [The De Vinne Press], 1908. Limited edition, number 396 of 425 copies on handmade Italian paper, this copy inscribed, signed, & dated in ink by Ira Hutchinson Brainard to artist Wilford Seymour Conrow at the ffep & additionally signed by Mary Brainard French on a following leaf. Tall octavo (9.75" x 7"), xiii & 95 pages plus 13 plates. Publisher's light gray paper over boards backed in dark gray cloth, with a printed paper spine label. Publisher's prospectus dated 1907 laid-in. Edges uncut.

Binding soiled & moderately rubbed, text block beginning to crack in a couple of places (still secure), previous owner's bookplate at the front pastedown, sporadic minor foxing, otherwise good or better. Prospectus soiled & folded.

An important association copy from author Brainard to artist Wilford Seymour Conrow, whose bookplate is applied to the front pastedown. Noted for portrait painting, Conrow's art can be found at the National Portrait Gallery, the Brooklyn Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Hickory Museum of Art.

Provides a biographical sketch & an "authoritative list of [297] book-plates designed & engraved by French." The plates include a miniature engraving of Millet's 'Sower, at the title page, two portraits of French, ten "impressions on proof paper from the coppers of his less known book-plates," & a previously unpublished engraving of the Harvard Quadrangle.
