About This Item

New York: Carleton, Publisher; London: S. Low, Son & Co., MDCCCLXIX (1869). First edition, this copy with presentation in ink by the author at the ffep:
"A M[onsieur] Chabot/ avec les compliments/ de M'elle Kraft."

12mo, viii, [9] - 316 & 8 (ie 6) pages of publisher's ads plus 5 mounted albumen photographs. Publisher's rust/ brown cloth lettered in gilt on the spine. Not found in The Truthful Lens.

Recently rebacked preserving original spine, long tear at the ffep now repaired on the verso (presentation not affected), binding moderately rubbed & soiled, scattered foxing, a very good copy.

Ms. Kraft departed Paris on December 1, 1868 in the company of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas T. Ferris (her sister and brother in law) and traveling companion J.S. Rogers. The group arriived in Egypt on December 11. As she notes in her prologue,
"In presenting this little work for the perusal of my friends, I beg to remind them that I have, as nearly as was consistent, adhered to the original design of giving a "diary" describing the manner of "living" and method of "travelling" on the Nile and through Syria, rather than entering deeply into incidents connected with the history of those countries …"

OCLC finds 15 copies of which 10 are in the United States as of 1/10/2023 (accession # 7684951). The entry notes the presence of 4 plates with "front possibly lacking."
