This is a collection of the Illustrated London News that was probably used to promote subscriptions. The date on the tile page indicates 1852, but the actual issues seem to run from June 11, 1842 to May 6, 1843. This volume contains about twenty five issues. While many issues say reprint, these reprints were done around 1852, for what appears some promotional effort. This volume contains some of the earlier issues of this publication, which began in May 1842. It contains some interesting news and illustrations, including a small engraving of a cricket match (p.164), an article on prison reform (October 22, 1842), and catching a whale (p. 388).

Description:
16mo, original red cloth, decoratively stamped in gilt and blind, illustrated with 125 engravings, 234 pp., and folding map 52 x 67 cm (20 1/2" x 26 1/4") plus decorative border. Old ink name on front pastedown, with catalogue entry glued in, some light foxing within, map slightly darkened, a few short splits at folds; otherwise very good. Smith was a prominent mapmaker in the mid 19th century. He competed with the likes of Colton and Mitchell, and was associated with John Disturnell back in the 1840s.He published a number of city maps around that time. In 1843 Smith published a large map of the United States, and three years later in 1846 he published the first edition of this map. Considered a really good map, it basically covers the eastern and midwestern part of the U.S. California and Oregon are featured in an inset, and part of Texas is also shown. Folio, newspaper, illustrated, 615-630 pp. Some chips, tears and folds at the edges and margins, front page a little darkened and browned, contents generally bright and clear; overall very good. The major article, which starts on the front page is the death of the Prince Consort (Prince Albert), he of course, was married to Queen Victoria. There are a number of wood engravings contained in this issue, including one of divers working on the Westminster Bridge. This is a relatively early depiction of diving equipment.

Calvin Stewart Brice (1845-1898) was born in Denmark, Ohio, and would become a U.S. senator from that state. He was also a railroad builder and financier. This pamphlet seems to document Brice's efforts to encourage 'aerial navigation.' He gives a little history on the subject and argues that when accomplished it would be "one of the greatest social, economic, and industrial revolutions in the history of mankind." ANB.

This is a presentation copy, which is signed "From the Author 1821" on the title page. Renwick (1792-1863) was an English born U.S. engineer and educator. He graduated from Columbia, and appears to have been a highly respected authority in engineering and science. he made important contributions in canal and railroad building, and had some involvement in the steam engine. The title page indicates he was a professor of natural and experimental philosophy at Columbia College. His son, James Renwick Jr., would become a famous architect, and would go on to design St. Patrick's Cathedral. ANB.

This work was privately printed by William Gwinn Mather, a descendant of the Mathers. Increase Mather (1639-`723) was one of the most important and prolific clergymen in early New England. He was president of Harvard College, and his religious writings had an important impact on American Religious thought during the early colonial period. The present work provides a list of close to two hundred titles published by Mather. ANB.
