Large scene of knight in armour on titlepage + full-page allegorical plate of three graces and flying Mercury signed I A [Jost Amman] & MF +156 full-page woodcuts of men in armour with their shield coats of arms.. Folio in morocco spined boards (tips bit worn). Title in red & black + 2pp (preface and intro) + captioned full page plate as half title (numbered p3) +4-162pp +[2]pp (colophon with large printer's emblem and blank verso), but seems to lack a final blank leaf. At page 55 is a full-page half title with over 30 figures while at page 103 and 145 are divisional titles with large decorative tailpieces. This divides the men in armour into 4 parts and the last plate in each section has a monogram CW for Christoph Weiditz. Eduard Fuchs (1870 - 1940) was a writer and art collector. He combined his research, writing and art collecting to produce a six-volume work, Sittengeschichte, Moral History and three volume Die Frau in der Karikatur, The Woman in the Cartoon. Fuchs was a prolific collector of the artist Honore-Victorin Daumier (1808 - 1879), a French caricaturist, cartoonist, lithographer, painter and sculptor and produced three volumes of his works. Very minor, excellently executed and barely noticeable professional restorations to a couple of hinges and corners. An excellent set, also internally very nice, clean, and fresh, wih only very minor occasional brownspotting. Old owner's inscription in the form of a poem and an old, vague owner's stamp (Giulini) to front free end-paper of volume one. Illustrated with hand coloured lettering and illustration to the title page and 24 hand coloured lino cut illustrations, each one above two verses of printed text. On the blank pages opposite somebody has written out in a neat early hand the English translation of the first 15 sets of verse. Possibly inscribed by the author, in English, on the blank leaf opposite the title page 'To Muriel with much love and best wishes! Christmas 1938. Franz and Elizabeth'. Original oatmeal coloured paper covered boards with title printed in outline and hand coloured, to the front panel. Spine of the outer wrapper is split, a little chipped and edges rubbed but overall a very good copy of this charming and rare book. No copies listed on Copac or Worldcat.

Description: Contemporary limp vellum with yapped edges. Spine lettered in ink on paper label. Duodecimo: 17 × 10 cm; pp. [24] ll., 480 [i.e. 476] pp., [39] ll. With 33 copper engraved plates (frontispiece portrait plate, title page, 5 portraits, 22 illustrations, 4 armorial plates – complete as issued), with a double genealogical illustration in the text, several decorative initials and tailpieces. Title page printed in red and black. All edges red.
Provenance: Contemporary inscription to front paste down: J.C.W. 1772. And to flyleaf: Carl Joachim s./l. [?] Witkowski 1889.
Condition: Vellum on the front stained, spine label with tear and some loss. Contents slightly toned. Pages 97, 311, 371, [477] with small paper loss at lower margin but not affecting text. But otherwise a very well preserved copy, complete with the full set of engravings as issued.
